📈 Côte d'Ivoire’s Strategic Move Towards Rice Self-Sufficiency Côte d'Ivoire is taking significant steps to overcome its dependence on rice imports through the implementation of the Emergency Food Production Program (2PAU-CI). Launched in 2023, this initiative aims to increase local rice production and reduce the country’s import needs. As of mid-2024, the program has already distributed 1,812 tons of rice seeds and 16,844 tons of fertilizer to 67,464 farmers. The goal is to support 800,000 rice producers to cultivate 88,000 hectares, with a vision to mechanize 30% of rice production by 2025. This effort aligns with President Alassane Ouattara’s broader economic goals, including achieving rice self-sufficiency by 2027 and establishing Côte d'Ivoire as a rice exporter by 2030. Domestic Milk Product/Value-Chain Development: Evaluation of Current State and Suggestions on the Possible Way Forward in Nigeria. Although there has been a significant increase in domestic milk production in Nigeria over the last few years, thanks to the increasing government supports and the backward integrated programs being implemented by local and international milk processing companies. However, Nigeria still spends an unacceptable fortune on importing finished/semi-finished milk products. The figure stands at around $1.2 - $1.5 billion as of today. As we continue to emphasize the need to double our dairy cattle farming efforts to increase local milk production at the farm gate, #YiSDN believes that it is also necessary to begin to address the topic of robust and organized milk product/value-chain development in Nigeria—from the point of supply by farmer/pastoralist gates to the table of consumers. We believe that increased investment and participation in the post-production segment of the milk value-chain is necessary to bridge supply gaps and to provide pastoralists and commercial dairy farm owners with the necessary motivation to increase output. Objective: This piece provides background information necessary to stimulate perspective-based evaluation of Nigeria's domestic milk value-chain segment. It highlights the socioeconomic opportunities lost due to the underdevelopment of this segment in Nigeria.
