Interns and managers of interns — check out these tips from New York Life to make the most of your experience this summer.
What additional advice do you have for interns and for their managers?
#SummerInternship#TeamNYL
Say hello to Yaw Nketia, our remarkable summer intern from Northwestern University! As he finishes up with us this week and heads back for his junior year, we’re thrilled to acknowledge his valuable contributions and the great work he’s done here at AAM.
1. What are you studying at Northwestern and what kind of career do you want to pursue once you graduate?
I am an economics major with a minor in mathematics and certificate for financial economics from the Kellogg School of Management. My career path has always been set on financial services, and I am interested in Investment Banking and Investment Management.
2. How do you think this internship has prepared you for your future career?
I learned a great deal about various asset classes including fixed income and alternative investments, and what key criteria and strategy our portfolio managers employ when making a decision as to whether to buy or sell an asset. I learned how to analyze credit spreads, understand yield curves, and interpret so much other financial data that I had no exposure to prior to this opportunity. Throughout the internship I developed a lot of soft skills in terms of sitting in on and contributing to office meetings with higher ups in attendance, which can always feel daunting as an intern. I also got a lot more comfortable balancing different project deadlines for various departments throughout the office.
3. Can you describe a project or task you worked on that you found particularly interesting or challenging?
I think my most challenging project that I found really intellectually stimulating was a project where I used power query and powerBI to help automate the processing of daily cash sheets and holdings reports coming in from the Clearwater database so that it would take less time for our team to do it every morning. I already felt pretty comfortable using excel but this made me take my proficiency to new heights while also helping the team with a very relevant task they needed me to assist with.
4. What was your favorite part of interning with us this summer?
It may sound cliché, but it really was the people. Even though I was here for a few months I felt like a small part of the AAM family. This company certainly has a remarkable office culture. It felt like everyone here cared about me and my own development rather than just focusing on the output or product that I was delivering to them. They took the time to explain concepts that were initially tricky and showed me a great deal of patience and understanding. Here, people at AAM treated me not knowing something as an opportunity to deepen my understanding of the topic and opportunity to connect, which made me feel so much more comfortable asking questions.
Thank you, Yaw, for your dedication and hard work this summer. We wish you continued success as you head back to school. Your positive impact has been appreciated, and we hope to see great things from you in the future!

Eytan Rozenblum, the nominator, shares in their nomination: “Lafayette provided me with insightful training with dedicated time from employees at all levels (from analysts to executives). During initial training, this helped me to quickly grasp the requirements for day-to-day operations and understand the company's long-run strategy and positioning within its market. Then, the mentorship provided by Lafayette allowed me to continuously grow and correct course to ensure that I got the most out of the experience. This took the form of regular 1-on-1s with analysts, associates, and leadership team members, including the CEO who regularly took time to ensure my training went well. This exposure has allowed me to develop my business acumen and bolster my strategic understanding of the real estate asset management industry.”

I loved this post from Asya Sharrow, and I think it's a great thought-exercise: Which early rejection are you most thankful for?
For me, it was probably being rejected from the University of Michigan's Creative Writing Program (now called the Helen Zell Writers’ Program) back in ~2000.
Being a fiction writer was my greatest ambition at the time. Not only did I have a great deal of passion for writing, but I also had a VERY, VERY high opinion of my abilities. (Yes, even back then!) I thought the application packet I submitted was going to blow everyone's wigs off, guaranteed.
Except it didn't. And being labeled "not good enough" made me rethink...everything. Certainly my career path, but also my ability to self-evaluate.
I'm not going to lie. It really hurt at first.
But it also forced me to get creative about how I wanted to apply my talents and interests. After I got the rejection letter, I decided to re-focus on working for The Michigan Daily and exploring opportunities in journalism.
That led to a madcap five-year run in the world of New York magazine publishing, and then seven years in online media — all of which gave me the skills I needed to transition to content marketing, a profession that has made me feel truly successful for the first time in my life.
Now, what if I was one of the chosen few that got picked for U of M's Creative Writing Program? What if I'd gotten accepted, instead of rejected?
I really don't know. Maybe I would have developed the skills and confidence to eke out a living as a semi-obscure fiction writer who publishes something every few years and never sells enough books to pay back my advance (or pay off my MFA loans), who has to supplement my passion through teaching creative writing, even though I was never a fan of being in classrooms in the first place. And that's a *best-case* scenario for most people who go through these programs.
As a working artist, I would have continued to build my life on rejection letters and acceptance letters — a terrible way to live.
My early rejection felt like a steel door slamming shut on one pathway in my life. But there were so many other pathways in front of me! I just didn't see them at first.
Once I found them, the rest of my life began.
In college, I applied for a summer internship at a big four consulting firm in NYC. Even with a 4.0 GPA and a finance major at a reputable business school, I didn’t get it. My first big rejection and I couldn’t handle the embarrassment and shame of it. I felt like a loser. I was sure this setback would impact my career forever.
It did.
I can’t be sure of what would have happened had I landed that internship but I can tell you with certainty what *wouldn’t* have happened.
I wouldn’t have extended my European semester abroad into the summer which means...
I never would have met Sebastien Vandecasteele which means…
I wouldn’t have moved to Barcelona which means…
There would be no SLAPS which means…
I wouldn’t spend every day with the best team along side my best friend, husband and business partner which means…
I wouldn’t have been back this week to see the work our team did for Female Founders Fund's CEO Summit on the floor of the NYSE which means…
I wouldn’t have heard the stories of setback and success from Diane von Furstenberg, Arianna Huffington, Cathy Engelbert and so many others.
Maybe I’d still be in NYC working for that same large consulting firm. But I can tell you that the life I have now is more fulfilling, balanced, exciting and challenging than I could have imagined in those internship application days.
Thank God I didn’t get that internship.
Huge thank you to FFF for the continued partnership and incredible day - you girls crushed it!

This year, we at Beringer have had the pleasure of working with Haris Sheikh, our 2024 Summer Investment Analyst, and we want you to get to know him too. We’re grateful to Haris for his hard work, fresh perspectives, and continuous desire to learn.
7 Questions with Beringer Capital Summer Analyst Haris Sheikh:
Q1. What did you want to be when you were a child?
A professional soccer player! Real Madrid all the way.
Q2. How did you decide on Beringer for your summer internship?
I knew someone that had worked at Beringer previously and they had great things to say, but then when I had my interview, I was really drawn in by the culture; everyone was so nice!
Q3. The coolest thing about my internship has been_______.
Getting to sit with people who run multi-million-dollar businesses, like @Benzinga and learning how they think.
Q4. What’s the key learning you’ll take away from your time at Beringer?
I’ve learned how to think like a Private Equity Analyst…what to look for in a deal and how the deal evolves over its lifecycle. Also, attention to detail is really important!
Q5. You’re a Finance major—do you see yourself being in the Private Equity world as a possible career path?
Yes, 100%. I was interested in it before, but this experience really affirmed it for me.
Q6: What is your favourite thing about being a part of the Beringer Capital team?
The team is incredibly supportive, and the collaborative culture fosters both personal and professional growth. It's inspiring to be part of a group where everyone is passionate about what they do, and where my contributions are valued and recognized.
Q7. What’s the most fun thing you’ve done at Beringer this summer?
On the social side, they had a welcome event at an Escape Room. I love Escape Rooms—I’ve done 16 of them. I only escaped from 15, though. The one I didn’t get out of was one I did with my parents. 😊
