Hiring a Good M&A Attorney In wealth management, hiring a good M&A attorney is just as important in getting a quality deal done as hiring a knowledgeable M&A advisor. Many owners have strong, long-standing relationships with their corporate attorneys and often have an inclination to hire them, or an attorney-client, to help them on the legal side of a deal. This is not the time!! Wealth management is such a nuanced business, where there are no hard assets changing hands. A good, practiced M&A attorney who has a history of working with wealth management firms in particular will go such a long way in ensuring you, your business and your employees are protected once the ink dries. They will know which legal terms are market and where it will be harder to push. They can speak the same language as the attorney on the other side of the table, which is invaluable when trying to get a deal done fairly. Just like an M&A advisor, whose job is to understand the business side of the market, it is the M&A attorney’s job to know the legal side. Georgia Morgan-Wynne and I were invited to speak on this topic at a General Counsel forum hosted by a leading mid-market private equity firm. In the session we did a Q&A with one of the general counsels of the portfolio companies who shared their experience of growing his role from sole legal counsel to a team of 50+ which was absolutely fascinating in terms of the changing landscape of their role during a period of rapid growth. From the session it was clear that as a General Counsel of a portfolio company there are so many factors to take into consideration when scaling and growing your team: ✳️Strategic Alignment: Ensure that the growth of the legal team aligns with the company's overall growth strategy and objectives. ✳️Assessing Needs: Continuously assess the legal needs of the company as it scales and enters new markets or industries. ✳️Talent Acquisition and Retention: Recruit legal professionals with diverse skills and expertise to meet the evolving needs of the company. Invest in training and development programs to upskill existing team members and prepare them for new challenges. Provide opportunities for career growth and advancement within the legal department. ✳️ Process: Implement efficient workflows and processes within the legal department to handle increased workload and complexity. Leverage technology and automation tools to streamline operations. ✳️ Culture & Collaboration: Foster the right culture and collaboration between the legal team and other departments within the company. However, 2024 shows promising signs of stability. Exciting lateral moves are happening, and speaking to partners, they anticipate a busier second half of the year.
