"Honeywell has agreed to buy aerospace and defense technology company CAES Systems for $1.9 billion from private equity firm Advent International, it said on Thursday, to give a boost to the manufacturing giant's aerospace technologies unit. The all-cash deal to buy CAES, which develops electronics such as antenna systems and communication networks for aerospace and defense companies, marks Honeywell's third acquisition so far this year. The latest deal comes at a time when top defense firms have seen orders surge in response to drawn out conflicts, including the Russian aggression against Ukraine and the ongoing war in Gaza. Curious what folks think about this. I believe it makes a lot of sense. Anti-trust regulations were geared towards maintaining a competitive environment within each EU country with benefits that inure to the government buyer and taxpayer. However, these nations often find themselves competing against national champions not only abroad but on their own turf. Thus far, the answer appears to be the strategic international consortium (vice all-out M&A). The first one I worked with was MBDA (while at BAE) which brought several European companies together to compete with the likes of Raytheon and Lockheed Martin. The result has been a widening of the market, which in turn has spurred competition and resulted in innovation. In fact, some of these weapons have found themselves on US platforms. As many European nations aim to boost defense spending to meet their NATO GDP spending obligations, the need to compete successfully with India, Singapore, Korea, the US and others will intensify. Should there be limitations to certain segments (e.g. space launch)? What will the creation of international, continental champions mean for competition in individual European nations? Several questions to ponder. What say you?
