All youth deserve space to figure out and be who they are. No matter someone’s gender identity or sexual orientation, all youth deserve to be treated with respect at school. They deserve access to evidence-based health care. They do not deserve to be excluded. We strongly condemn Alberta’s transphobic policies announced yesterday. Growing up is hard enough, especially when you feel different — Why make it even more difficult for some of the most vulnerable kids? Albertans deserve solutions to today’s most pressing problems, not misinformed policies meant to pit us against each other. Trans youth deserve safety, not legislative bullying. We must all call on our governments to give youth the freedom to be their true and authentic selves. Alberta joins Saskatchewan and New Brunswick in attacking the rights of 2SLGBTQ+ people. We’re fed up. We’re fired up. It was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1989 and is ratified by over 190 countries. People who advocate for the Convention on the Rights of the Child believe that all #children have the right to grow and develop in a safe and healthy environment, to have access to #education and health care, to be protected from #violence and exploitation, and to participate in the life of society. The core values of a person who advocates for the Convention on the Rights of the Child are: . Dignity: All children have #dignity and deserve to be treated with respect. . #Equality: All children have the same rights, regardless of their circumstances. . #Protection: All children have the right to be protected from violence, #exploitation, and #discrimination. . Participation: All children have the right to participate in the life of society and to express their #opinions. These #values are essential to ensuring the well-being and development of children. They are present in the actions and decisions of people who work for the defense of children's rights, whether in the government, civil society, or individual sphere. Here are some examples of how these core values can be applied in practice: . Dr Carmel Wards blog post in this weeks Scealta, is a very thought provoking and timely piece. As you read through it, you may find that you are starting to feel uncomfortable reflecting on your own practice. That is a good thing. Keep going! It may just mean that you are challenging your thinking and biases, rather than just reaffirming them. "Before educators and practitioners can support children to recognise discrimination, including racism, and know what to do when they encounter it, adults need to think and talk openly about these issues". Use this opportunity to start thinking about,and talking about issues of discrimination and racism, in your community. Unfortunately, you won't have to search far to find examples. 🕊️ On Human Rights Day, let's champion Freedom, Equality, and Justice for All. 🌍 Reflecting on vulnerability, let's recognise some here: 1. **Refugees:** Facing displacement and persecution, often deprived of basic rights. 2. **Children:** Vulnerable to exploitation, violence, and limited access to education. 3. **LGBTIQA+:** Including trans and gender-diverse individuals facing discrimination and marginalisation. 4. **Indigenous Peoples:** Facing historical injustices, land dispossession, and cultural marginalisation. 5. **Persons with Disabilities:** Battling discrimination and barriers to accessibility. 6. **Elderly Population:** Often facing neglect, abuse, and limited resources for well-being. 7. **Individuals with Mental Health Challenges:** Battling stigma, limited access to care, and discrimination. 8. **Those Affected by Substance Abuse:** Confronting stigma, limited support, and barriers to recovery. 9. **Suicide Prevention Advocates:** Striving to break the silence and promote mental well-being. 10. **Sex Workers:** Navigating legal and social challenges, facing stigma, violence and self advocating for their rights. 🌈 In honoring those who face heightened challenges, I dedicated my morning drawing to the resilience of "those ladies of the night," acknowledging their strength and calling for compassion and understanding. 👊 Together, let's work towards a world where every individual's rights are protected and celebrated. #HumanRightsForAll ✊ #HumanRightsday
