Categories aren't about brands COMPETING for one consumer ... they are about an ecosystem of different brands CONTRIBUTING unique value for different people. Recent fast food headlines are reminding us of this: 🍔 🍔 🍔 On one hand, fast food brands like Mcdonalds and Taco Bell are cutting back because ‘value” meals now cost double what they used to and same store sales are being hit 🌯 🌯 🌯 On the other hand, revenues are rising at fast casual restaurants like Chipotle and Sweetgreen, reflecting strong demand as those brands take on price increases. 💸 💸 💸 💸 💸 💸 💸 💸 💸 💸 Despite different audiences and different category corners, here is what I find interesting: as traditional fast food prices get closer to fast casual prices that erodes fast food's proposition (affordability) and makes fast casual's proposition (fast + fresh + quality) even more attractive. A similarly high priced burger and chipotle bowl will inevitably make people 1) flee for alts and/or 2) start looking at the burger as a bad deal vs the bowl.
