DOES IT MATTER FOR MEDICAL SALES HIRING MANAGERS—INSIDE VS OUTSIDE SALES??? The short answer is “yes it does”! Hiring managers want experience which closely mirrors being a medical sales representative. The main difference is customer-facing. Inside sales reps are always on the phone trying to sell their product/service. While they gain experience working the sales process (ie handling objections, probing, closing etc), they’re never face to face with their customers. Outside sales reps have to walk into a business (most of them don’t want you in there just like medical sales) and get past the gate-keeper to get to the decision-maker. In medical sales, you have to get by the receptionist/nurse/manager (gate-keeper) to get to the decision-maker (physician). It’s very similar to outside B2B sales and that’s why the hiring medical sales managers want outside B2B reps for entry level roles. Lastly, the companies they love to hire from are ADP, Paychex, Cintas, Unifirst, Xerox, Enterprise etc. They love these companies because they know they have excellent sales training programs so they know you’ll know how to sell. Now all they have to do is train you to sell their product. 4 of the top ways to break into med device sales in order: 1. Get 6-24months of B2B sales experience then become an ASR. Ortho/trauma/total joints/sports med hire a lot once you have sales experience at companies like UniFirst Corporation Cintas ADP Paychex WM etc 2. Going from tech or nurse to a clinical specialist then sales. Some go straight to sales. 3. Recent college athlete graduate to associate rep at a large company like Boston Scientific Stryker Medtronic Johnson & Johnson DePuy Synthes Arthrex CONMED Corporation Smith+Nephew Zimmer Biomet BD McKesson Syneos Health IQVIA and more 4. Somebody with no sales experience networks like crazy with reps, managers, and recruiters, gets an interview, shows they’re hungry, driven, gritty, excellent at networking, and tells great stories with examples of how they exceed expectations in their current role and how they sell without the title and produce results. I started with 1.5 years at UniFirst. There are other great stories of people breaking in, but these are the most common paths I see!
