Today, we are happy to announce a new OECD.AI Expert Group on Data and Privacy. As AI evolves rapidly, it raises incredible opportunities and challenges that require more international multistakeholder cooperation in data governance and privacy. Recent progress in generative AI happened partly thanks to vast training data stored in servers and networks worldwide. Like the data, actors involved in the AI lifecycle are also spread across jurisdictions, highlighting the need for synchronisation, clear guidance and cooperation. Governments worldwide can benefit from AI and privacy communities working together to achieve common goals to foster innovation, safeguard human rights and promote the common good. We look forward to members of these communities coming together to exchange knowledge and experiences to ensure compatibility and synergy between AI and privacy frameworks for achieving a trustworthy AI ecosystem. 📢 OECD Launches New Expert Group on AI and Data Protection "A fast-evolving AI and privacy policy landscape calls for international cooperation" - OECD.AI ➡ The OECD - OCDE has launched a new Expert Group that aims to bridge the AI and Privacy communities. "We need synergies between the AI and privacy communities" - OECD.AI 🔥 The OECD has long been a forum for international guidelines on emerging technologies. In 1980 (!!) the OECD set out the Privacy Guidelines, among the most influential digital policy frameworks in history. And more than 50 countries have endorsed the OECD AI Principles of 2019. "The OECD’s Privacy Guidelines and the AI Principles are essential guidance for regulating their domains. Another example of the importance of cross-collaborative regulation with industry and international, expert working groups (in this case, the OECD) - This underlines the need for (a) international standards (b) law commonality; and (c) genuine, 'mortise and tenon' (i.e. truly crafted and interlocking) regulatory texts and concepts. Otherwise, the conflicts and duplication will cause unnecessary burden for businesses and will impede innovation. AI should surely assist lawmakers in identifying these conflicts, duplication and ambiguity (when drafting laws). #ai #dataprotection #privacy #datastrategy

After AIGO in OECD meeting we unanimously agreed that new component of working agenda of observatory of AI is needed to to analise a flowing of data throughout a lifecycle of #AI systems. It is a new Expert Group on Data and Privacy.

Stanford University has recently published a white paper 'Rethinking privacy in AI era', which addresses the complex interplay between data privacy and AI development, tackling critical privacy concerns while outlining solutions to mitigate associated risks. The paper argues that current privacy legislations like Fair information practice principles (FIPs) and General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) are inadequate in regulating AI and the challenges that may emerge from it. It emphasizes on the need for new regulatory approaches that go beyond current privacy legislation to effectively manage the risks associated with AI-driven data acquisition and processing, and suggests 3 key strategies: 1) Denormalize "data collection by default" by shifting the burden from users to opt out, promoting "privacy by default". 2) Focus on the AI data supply chain to enhance privacy and data protection. 3) Develop new governance mechanisms and technical infrastructure, making it easier for people to manage and control how their personal information is used by AI systems.
