The world is full of needs. Abusing the non-profit status of a university to pay someone to play football there does not rank anywhere in my heirarchy of philanthropy. This "charity's" purpose is found in its FAQs: "Majority of donations to The Varsity Collective Charitable Fund will be spent directly on compensating Badger student-athletes as they create positive impacts on the community and advance charitable and philanthropic causes." I don't understand why this is a tax-deductible activity. If these athletes are professionals, they should be paid a fair wage by their employer. A better use of your charitable donations? Something that changes a system such that people stuck in poverty can move out of poverty. I have had many challenges in my 30 year tech career, from harassment to gender discrimination. Each challenge I overcome is attributed to the drive as not being seen as the "weaker sex". In many ways I am grateful for these challenges because they have made me stronger and prepared me for my team leadership role.
