What was your first job like? Here's how old I am: I found mine in the NY Times classified section, not long after graduating from college. (I was blissfully unaware of the whole on-campus recruiting scene.) I remember my Mom tossing the newspaper at me, saying something like, "Time to stop freeloading." Luckily, it was the late 90s, and there were jobs to be had in business journalism, especially if you could help explain this weird new thing called the Internet. My first employer? Simba Information, where I wrote a weekly (print!) newsletter called Computer Publishing & Advertising Report. I counted ad pages in computer magazines by hand. It was exhilarating. I also learned how to "make every word tell," as E.B. White famously put it. (I hadn't found his advice on concise writing yet.) Before taking the leap to Fox Talent, I was on the verge of joining another company. Making the decision to step away from that opportunity, ironically, makes me a recruiter's worst nightmare 🙈. They’re a fantastic business, with brilliant founders and team. They put a lot of effort into securing me for the role. It was an opportunity to help them grow the business, with potential to develop to leadership level (if any digital recruiters are looking, I'd be happy to introduce you!). BUT, with some time off, I realised that’s not the path for me. I’m not actually looking to climb the ladder into management, or leadership, or to be in a corporate structure and take on extra responsibility. Quite simply, I just love recruitment and want to focus on being the absolute boss at that. When I interviewed in my younger years, and was asked ‘where do you see yourself in 5 years?’, I would always say ‘I’d like to progress to leading my own team’ - that was a lie, I had NO IDEA what I wanted then (still don't most of the time, even at 40 🤷🏻♀️). I assumed that was the answer that was expected of me (and in some cases it is, which just needs to stop!) Why am I telling you this? Because IT IS OK if you don’t want to climb the ladder. IT IS OK if you enjoy your role and want to develop and grow within that. Not everyone has to strive for the top dog positions. My advice to those heading into interviews is always to be genuine and true to yourself. There's no point investing time in a role that won't bring you happiness. Focus on doing what you love 😊

Paloma Faith gave a cracking interview at the V & A Museum last night and this comment really stood out for me. Careers are a sequence of employment-related positions, roles, experiences. They contain time in, time out, time going up, down and sideways. Never apologise for taking time out or having a life outside of work: Mums, Dads, whoever you are. Just talk about what you can do and the problems that you solve for others. That's my theory of career success, from my book Mind Flip: flip the focus away from yourself and instead look outwards - on to the value you add and the problems you, uniquely, can solve for other people. How did I end up being a recruiter? I just stumbled across a link to Hung Lee's "Brainfood Tribune" where he had wanted to get a peek into the narrative of some of us practising recruiters. Ever wondered how your childhood shaped your professional journey? As a child, I found magic in the simplest things – summer holidays at my grandparents' house, with no gadgets or TVs, just endless days of play and imagination in the paddy fields and mango orchards. Little did I know, these moments were silently sculpting my future. Fast forward to my high school years – a pivotal decision on the hockey field taught me the essence of leadership and teamwork. I chose to play as a 'centre half' rather than a 'forward', not realizing this choice would mirror my future career approach: facilitating success, rather than solely chasing personal glory. These experiences were more than just memories; they were life lessons in disguise. They taught me the value of being present, the importance of teamwork, and the power of leading from the middle. Now, as I reflect on my career path, I see a pattern of choices influenced by those early years. Choices that led me to prioritize collective success, empathy, and strategic thinking.
