WheelPower are thrilled to offer new dates for our ‘Engaging Wheelchair Participants in Sports course’, with a brand new learning style and course materials, to help you involve everyone in the world of sport and physical activity. We aim to give you the skills, knowledge and confidence to be able to run sessions which include and involve all people with any physical disabilities. The course is free, but we ask you to think about making a charitable donation to assist with WheelPower’s vital work.  The course is now split into two different sections; a 1 hour self-guided module, followed by a 2 hour tutor led session online which includes more practical sessions to get you more immersed in the learning experience. This figure is alarming. This is the ratio of children leaving primary school who cannot swim at least 25 metres. All schools must provide swimming instruction either in KS1 or KS2. Children should be taught to swim competently, confidently, and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres, use a range of strokes effectively, and perform safe self-rescue. That’s not opinion, that’s the national curriculum! The number of pools across the UK is continuing to decrease and this is the main reason that fewer children move to secondary school with these life saving skills. This does not give every child a fair and equal start. Schools that do have pools, and share their facilities with local schools for free, are helping to slow an increase in that ratio. Finished my second 5K this year yesterday. Woo hoo! The Waldwick 5K supports more than two dozen nonprofits each year and attracts hundreds of people. I was delighted to be a part of it! My goal is to complete 3-4 5Ks this year in my attempt to rebuild a habit of jogging, connect with my local community and have fun. Yesterday, I wanted to best my first 5K time and really enjoy the race. I beat my first time by 3 min and smiled the entire race (vs grimmacing and grinding my teeth like the first one). Have you been pondering a goal and aren’t sure how to get started? If I can restart jogging after being away from it for a decade, you can, too! 💡1. Start small - choose a microstep to get going, something that you are totally capable of doing. I started with less than a mile and only 1-2 times a week so I wouldn’t get hurt or burn out. 👋 2. Tell a friend - get support from those around you. I told family and friends and their cheering helped me stay motivated. 🎉 3. Celebrate the wins - a pat on the back goes a long way towards reinforcing a habit. Choose something that feels great to you. For me, it’s as simple as watching a favorite show, a small treat or a massage after each race. How do you know when someone is training for a marathon? Don’t worry, they’ll tell you. I’m training for the Edinburgh Marathon next month. What’s more, is that I am doing it for an amazing disability charity called Canine Partners, which provides assistance dogs (a bit like guide dogs) to help people with disabilities live full and independent lives. I’m ecstatic to say that I’ve managed to hit my initial £500 goal for Canine Partners, but that doesn’t mean you’ve missed your chance to donate if you haven’t already… or for me to cheekily ask you for a bit more help if you have. I’d love to raise a bit more, which is why in true runner style I’m upping the target for the last 4 weeks for a final push to £650. For an idea of what I’m doing to prepare for the Edinburgh Marathon on May 26th: My average is up at 60km (37.5mi) run per week, which now with 4 weeks to go will slowly taper down until the big day. I’ve just run the longest single training run before the marathon - just under 28km (17.3mi) this morning before work, which meant getting up at 5AM. It’s 14.2km below what I’ll be running on the day, so in 4 weeks time I shall be entering unknown territory in that last hour. I just need to trust to my training plan… Thank you and wish me luck!

On the surface, this video looks just like any group out on a social run. To me it represents the kind of work we do at The Running Charity. It was taken during our last long run around Hyde Park in April this year. Three of the group were training for their first London Marathon. My colleague Jerry Carey, who was a beneficiary when I took on the Women's Programme Coach role just over 5 years ago, was on the way to marathon number 5. I myself was about to run my 6th. The other person is one of our London volunteers, who is a seasoned runner and has also run marathons. That's a lot of mileage between us all. But it's not just purely the physical representation here. When a young person is referred to our programme, we are aware of the impact of homelessness and complex support needs on their mental health. Sometimes running is the last thing they need or even considered, and yet the impact of something as simple as putting one foot in front of the other is so effective. Young people feel like they can talk about their problems or worries on a run without fear of judgement. Sometimes we may find a solution straight away, whilst other times it's the catalyst for long-term change. Every one of us in this group started off as complete beginners. Over time, we've all become better and stronger runners. Not only that but we have become a close knit community that support and lift each other up, developed a strong sense of resilience when things get difficult not just when we are training or racing but with life related events and inspired others to also get involved with running. #ThrowbackThursday #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek #MomentsForMovement #Resilience #PhysicalActivity #Running #TRCfamily
