San Francisco International Airport's Harvey Milk Terminal 1 was the very first terminal in the US to install a tote-based Independent Carrier System (ICS). As well as providing 100% tracking and traceability of every bag at each step of the process, the CrisBag ICS that SFO chose to install provides them with significant savings of up to $3.5 million per year due to its substantial reduction in energy consumption. In terms of security, the integration of an Explosives Detection System (EDS) also makes CrisBag the first system to be certified by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for in-tote baggage security screening. SFO is setting new benchmarks for secure, efficient, and cost-effective airport operations, and we took a deep dive into the Terminal 1 project, speaking to various people involved to gain their insight into why the CrisBag ICS was chosen and the direct benefits the airport is now experiencing. When I do ADR Awareness training, I regularly repeat the phrase "never say never". People make mistakes and freight, including dangerous goods, can be mis-consigned. Things happen and the "Oh, it won't happen to me" attitude is only asking for problems. I was on the plane in the attached clip. The fire happened after very soon after we we off fortunately and I'm waiting to see what the cause was. Our luggage wasn't as fortunate and caught up with us 2 days later. The most worrying phone call I had was on a Friday afternoon, some years, when the caller casually let me know they thought they had put a Class 7 Radioactive package on a trailer destined for my site. Squeaky bum time duly ensued especially when the vehicle arrived and the package was confirmed! It was all resolved safely and legally, though some strongly worded emails were exchanged.
