🚀✈🚁 Runway pavement detaches during take-off! 🚀✈🚁 ▪️On November 14th, a Gol Boeing 737-800 performing a flight from Navgantes to Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) was forced to cancel take-off after the runway pavement detached and hit the aircraft. ▪️First elements indicate that large sections of the asphalt were blown off when pilots applied take-off thrust, damaging the aircraft's tail and stabilizers. The crew was forced to reject take-off at a speed of 60knots, but was able to taxi back to the apron. No injuries were reported, but the airport authorities took the obvious decision to temporarily close the airport. ▪️Runway pavements are specially designed to withstand heavy loads, high-speed traffic and unusual weather conditions. They are generally composed of a mixture of concrete materials (portland cement, sand, coarse aggregates and water) with a thickness of 15 to 51 centimetres or even more. The question of runway maintenance clearly arises and we can be thankful that a more serious incident did not occur...

For instance, under certain conditions (e.g., when a ship moves through water), the Coandă effect changes the direction of a propeller jet, causing it to follow the shape of the ship’s hull. The side force from a tunnel thruster at the bow of a ship decreases rapidly with forward speed, but a key challenge is that the bow thruster is used for low-speed maneuvering. The side thrust may completely disappear at speeds above about 3 knots.
