I have a story for y'all that is applicable to agencies, studios, and in-house teams of all shapes and sizes. Let me tell you about the time Happy Cog almost tore itself apart about a year after I merged my studio, Airbag Industries, into the company, and how that event sparked the foundation of Same Team Partners. A relatively simple solution that Brett Harned and I came up with completely turned things around almost immediately and morale shot up to a whole new level. #teamdevelopment #organizationalculture https://lnkd.in/gRb7VF-G

"Today, I see many folks lamenting the current lack of events to attend. An Event Apart is long gone, XOXO just closed its doors, and Config, like SXSW, is way too big to be meaningful. People aren’t wrong to long for human connection and community, but my advice is to stop waiting for someone else to create it for you." #communitybuilding #buildyourown #trustmeiknow https://lnkd.in/gVcUJgci

I don’t know about you but I was inspired by tonight's presidential debate. One candidate stood out with their command of the most important issues and said what it takes to grip the nation's attention with promises of “concepts of plans.” Whoa! This, I thought, is the best idea in this history of history. And then I had another thought, “Why has no one sold concepts of plans?!” So, I asked AI and it replied within nanoseconds that this is what McKinsey and other consultancies do all day long. And, get this, they charge at least $1,000 an hour doing this. Dude, they make billions of dollars making concepts all day long. No actual ideas or thoughts, just ideas of ideas that could be ideas for a plan. If this is all it takes to lead a country, just imagine what this could do for small to medium businesses! Forget the robots! Screw bit-blockchain-coin—so dumb. Concepts™ is the new Big Leagues. This is where the action is and the money is at. Like China kind of money. So, as of this evening, I am pivoting all of my energy into a new service called Paradigm Concepts Synergy Strategy. Here’s how it works: * Discovery: We discuss contemporary issues like why people from faraway lands prefer to eat household pets instead of McDonald's. * Concepts: Consider what other groups have tried in the market so that we can distort the truth and blame them for the problem in the first place. * Deploy: Launch into attack ads and Jibba-Jabba rhetoric blaming competitors for the problem while hinting at unbelievable solutions that are going to be better than anything anyone has ever seen ever. * Outcome: Win in the marketplace, profit, and display our opulence with a sesh at Darqué Tan. Had I known being successful in business was as easy as this, I would have bought another AI-powered margarita machine a long time ago. Why am I trying to make do with a Betty Crocker Water Ice Maker I don’t know. #conceptsofplans #leadership #weird #cheetosface

One of the most important tasks I can do as a leader is to direct the team when the time for thinking is over and it’s time to make. I know firsthand how easy it is to get stuck reviewing the past and wondering about the future. As much as staying in the past or the future can be intriguing it can also be harmful. Anxiety lives in the past and in the future. And it gets in the way of our progress. We stay in the past or the future because we worry about not having enough information or if our idea is the right option. Staying in these time frames preoccupies our minds with doubt and fear. It doesn’t take much for these emotions to compromise our confidence and paralyze our abilities to make decisions, move forward, and feel positive about ourselves and our work. We can’t change the past nor can we predict the future, but we can lean into what we know and what we can do now—today. It’s better to make based on what you know versus worrying about what we don’t know or what could happen. This is true not only about our work but our lives. Wondering if you should have taken that other job or if there will be layoffs does absolutely nothing to positive for your mental health or your ability to make logical decisions. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t think about these things, just give yourself a way back so you don’t get stuck there, because when even the smallest amount of fear sets in, it’s way too easy to sink. Anxiety lives in the past and the future. If we remain in the present, where we are now, there isn’t as much to fear. #anxiety #moveforward #hopefulnessisawarrioremotion

My last coaching session on Friday started with grim news. The leader shared that their world was about to get rocked by a big shake-up in the organization with a new CEO and the hiring of a new C-suite position to which the leader and their team would inevitably report. That is when the new executive is finally hired, likely, sometime in February. They shared that their team is on edge and very anxious, with so much internal uncertainty, while the UX world continues to burn outside. Nowhere seems safe. I suggested that the leader remind the team that anxiety lives in the past and the future. If we remain in the present, where we are now, there isn’t as much to fear. Worrying about what could happen does absolutely nothing positive for your mental and physical health. What remains is to focus on what you can control and endeavor to hope for positive outcomes in the future. That’s not to say that you have to sit on your hands and leave the future up to others, but worrying about it never ends well. I also shared the story Nick Cave shared earlier this week about hopefulness. It’s incredibly powerful to hear and to hold close to your core. I posted about this and included the transcript on my blog. It’s worth reading, watching, and sharing with others. Despite living in a world of ongoing fluctuation, adding more and more to our current “interesting times”, we can not lose hope. Center your focus on the now—today—and protect yourself with the hopefulness that you will be active in your future positive outcomes. #hope #hopfulness #stopaxietybylivinginthenow
