While women’s overall labor force participation has significantly improved in Kenya since the 1990s, reaching 75.6% in 2015-16, only 39.3% are employed in the modern wage sector. The rest are employed either in agriculture or domestic service. Childcare responsibilities and lack of quality care services; lack of higher education and a high share of informal sector work are the major barriers to women accessing decent work in Kenya — according to a recent study conducted by PEP researchers, which was funded by Co-Impact. Uganda has one of the youngest populations in the world: 78% of Ugandans are under the age of 30. This significant development potential also presents major challenges. Most Ugandans aged 18-30 (64%) are unemployed. When they do have work, younger people are far more likely to have informal jobs which don’t generate an income or engage with markets, and this is especially true for young women. Pictured below are some of the young adults from one of our projects in Uganda which has been training young people in employment skills and opportunities for business start-ups in the country’s fast-growing dairy industry and supply chain. At the end of five years, we will have trained 63,400 young people aged 18-35 (70% of them are young women), with the aim that 50,000 of them will be working in salaried or self-employment. “Empowering youth with skills today is the key to unlocking a brighter, more innovative tomorrow. The 'Climate Change Refresher Training for Home-Based Workers in Nepal' has been successfully completed. Organized by HomeNet South Asia (HNSA), Saathi, Women for Human Rights (WHR), and Mahila Housing Trust (MHT), this three-day training program in Kathmandu emphasized the need for community action and government intervention to address the effects of climate change on women working in the informal sector. 5TH SOCIAL PROTECTION DIALOGUE The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection will hold its '5th Social Protection Dialogue' Series, from the 12th to 13th of December 2023 in Accra. The theme is: "Enhancing the Well-being of Vulnerable Ghanaians through Effective Social Protection Systems," The theme will address critical issues facing vulnerable populations in Ghana. The dialogue aims to engage stakeholders and experts in open discussions on key social protection-related issues and features three sub-themes: 1. Scaling up Reassessment of the LEAP Programme: A critical investment for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 2. Leveraging Social Protection Systems to Enhance Food and Nutrition Security in Ghana. 3. Social Protection as Shared Responsibility: Strengthening the role of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Media. The National Social Protection (NSP) Dialogue Series serves as a platform for discussing emerging issues affecting vulnerable groups in Ghana. And this year's dialogue builds on the success of previous discussions held. 𝑷𝒐𝒍𝒊𝒄𝒚 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒇 07: 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒎𝒐𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑼𝒏𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒂𝒍 𝑺𝒐𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒕𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑺𝒚𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒎 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑵𝒆𝒆𝒅 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑻𝒂𝒓𝒈𝒆𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑫𝒊𝒔𝒂𝒅𝒗𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒅 𝑮𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒑𝒔 As Bangladesh aims to become a developed country by 2041, establishing a USP system ought to be seen as a key component of its development agendas. To note, in developed countries such as Finland, Canada, Japan, and the UK, more than 90 per cent of the population is covered under social protection support system. The introduction of the USP system will allow Bangladesh to strengthen social protection across four broad aspects: universal coverage, comprehensive protection in terms of risks covered, adequacy of protection across the life cycle, and sustainability of the social protection system. While Bangladesh has a long history of providing social protection support through dedicated schemes, the adoption of the National Social Security Strategy (NSSS) in 2015 ought to be seen as an important milestone in re-energising the country’s social protection system. The NSSS lays out several reform priorities towards a USP system in Bangladesh. It is important to note that the concept of “universal” social protection goes hand in hand with the aspiration of building an inclusive society in Bangladesh, which is at the centre of the NSSS. Having a clear understanding about the core elements of USP, in line with the NSSS, is a necessary first step to ensure that no one is left behind. The core ideas informing USP, in line with the concept of a welfare state, need to be appropriately understood. Tackling Child Labour and Enhancing Youth Opportunities in Ghana 🍫 The Swiss Platform for Sustainable Cocoa is delighted to share news about a new project aimed at combating child labour and fostering youth opportunities in #Ghana. 🎯 Objective: The primary goal of this landscape project, co-funded by SECO Wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung, is to tackle the prevalent issue of child labour. In Ghana, 28% of children between the ages of 5 and 17 are engaged in child labour. We aim to contribute to reducing this cycle by addressing root causes such as limited access to quality services and insufficient job opportunities for youth. 🤝 Partnership: The project will leverage expertise and resources to create sustainable solutions through a technical partnership between UNICEF Ghana and the International Cocoa Initiative (ICI). Bringing together stakeholders from the government, the private sector, and local communities, the project will foster a unified approach to combat child labour. 🌍 Multistakeholder Approach: The project’s ambition is to tackle structural challenges and ensure the cooperation of all stakeholders, including development partners, the private sector, and civil society organisations, to create systems that are integrated with governmental mechanisms. 🤝 Multisectoral Approach: The project brings key sectors together, such as child protection, social protection, education, law enforcement, youth skilling and employability and livelihood development through the Integrated Social Services and landscape approach. The project also prioritises public finance management to strengthen the institutional system and its ownership. 🔍 Expected Outcomes: Children and families will benefit from integrated social services. Thanks to the project, communities will become more aware of children’s rights, and reporting mechanisms of child labour cases and referral pathways will extend to communities, cocoa companies, farmers, women's associations, and government staff. Furthermore, the youth will gain access to skilling and job opportunities.
