Boston Consulting Group (BCG) tested over 20 different needs, with roughly half being functional needs such as pay, hours, and benefits, and the other half being emotional needs such as feeling valued and supported, and doing work you enjoy, for the survey, titled “What Really Matters At Work, And Why We Should Care”. I have been thinking so much about the role of the workplace and the future of mental health. The expectations of companies role in employee well being has shifted. It is not shifting, it has shifted. And companies that keep up with the changes will positively contribute to well being of their employees AND be more competitive. It is imperative to focus on internal systems, prevention, culture AND engage in systems change for the mental health and substance use care systems. Companies that have great internal resources need to also ensure that when employees and their families engage in treatment that it is evidence based and in network. It is a complicated new landscape and we can work together to ensure mental health as essential health.
