HAPPY 4TH OF JULY TO MY AMERICAN FRIENDS… Wishing you all a day filled with joy, freedom, and wonderful celebrations spent with your loved ones. Have a safe holiday weekend! FRIENDLY REMINDER - 1 in 5 dogs go missing during 4th of July… Lets change the statistics and keep our four legged companions at home this year! Follow these helpful tips below: 1. Tire them out beforehand: Go for a walk, play fetch, provide some enrichment games, and get your pup tired before the fireworks are being set off. 2. Create a quiet and secure space: Try to have your pet use the bathroom before fireworks time. If necessary to go during, please be sure to keep your pet on a leash. Place them in a bathroom or somewhere centralized to your home to minimize the noise. Play some music or a movie as a distraction. 3. Identification: Make sure your pet has their tags present and/or microchip information up to date in the case that your pet does run away. 4. Provide distractions: make a frozen treat, use an enrichment game, provide a good bone to chew on. Whatever your pet enjoys most provide to them as a distraction. 5. Do you want to teach your dog to “leave it”🌟 This will help your dog to be more restrained around food Here’s how: 🐾 First offer your dog low value food in a closed fist. They may dribble and slobber over your hand. Just bear with it. Unless they use teefs, then take your hand away. 🌈When they back away, even slightly, from your hand, say “yes!” and give them a lovely tasty treat from the other hand. 🌟 REPEAT LOADS 🐶 See if you can offer the food in an open hand, and repeat the same exercise, saying “yes” when they back away from it and rewarding from the other hand. If they try to help themselves from your open hand, simply close it and if they persist, put it behind your back until they settle again. 💫When they are reliably moving back from the food when offered an open hand, add the cue “leave it”, just as they are doing it, then again say “yes” and reward from the other hand. 🌟When this is nice and solid and the dog is enjoying getting this right, put a treat down on a plate on the floor and say leave it.
