Owners: "Nobody wants to join the trades......" Young folks: “I don’t have enough experience to get a construction job.” I’ve heard both sides of the story. And I’m siding with the young guns on this post… I came across this post recently (screenshot). It’s a young business owner writing this. They’re already making money, wanting to leave it all to join the trades. He's using his free time to get OSHA-30 certified and trying to find a way to get his foot in the door. The guy is HUNGRY! And it’s what we all look for in our industry. But before you say, "nobody is joining the trades." Remember this post. They're out there. And when they show up knocking on your door… Don’t turn them down because they’re “too green.” Believe it or not… I’ve talked to construction business owners that hired folks from McDonald’s and Starbucks eager to learn. And they go on to become one of their best employees. With that being said… Be the person who hires for hunger and attitude. Don't be the person who wants 78yrs of experience and blames it on "nobody wanting to join the trades". We (the industry) must become a better bridge between the desire to join the trades and the path to making that a reality. Hiring the person that has the attitude of "I'll figure it out" (even if they're a bit green) will become a great asset. Open the door. Become the solution. #trades #construction #hammr
A class I spoke to on Monday- out of 42 students, only 2 raised their hands to say they were going to college. The rest said they were going directly into the workforce in the trades. I couldn't believe my eyes. The issue was, none of them knew the direct path to get there and they are graduating in a couple months. Hunger ✅ Path into our industry ❓
Be the employer of choice - which means appreciating how a hire could help you in the long run, not just today.
This is awesome to see! There are young folks that are hungry and willing to do what it takes to find a fullfilling career in the blue collar world 💪🏼🛠️
This would be such an amazing opportunity to ANYONE with interest in construction. Imagine the wealth of knowledge you could gain, drawing upon a HUGE combined amount of years' worth of experience in the fields!!! And for the folks that would hopefully host these interested parties, this could be a great opp to pitch for possible future....I'm not in the field, but what's a construction 'intern' called? Imagine if after a few visits, you can then give them the opp for some site-time actually doing things? Maybe offer some employment opps for the folks you really sync'd with? From my completely non-construction based viewpoint, this seems like a win-win. I'm sure there'd be some safety concerns, insurance, OSHA things to take into consideration but MAN. I know some younger folks that are financially sitting pretty after being given the chance to experience these trade fields and then excell in them!!!
Now don’t be running them off and being borderline bipolar on a job site so they’ll stay. Let’s talk about that next.
What use is the knowledge that we have if we don’t pass it onto others Every one has something to bring to the table and they just might surprise you!
The guy is hungry!! 😎 Good for him. Myself being 28 and having been in the industry for 10 years now moving from positions until starting my company I can relate to where's he's coming from.
I shoot social content for ambitious contractors 🏗️📸
