Glad everyone is safe first and foremost. In case there are other aviation nerds that like to dive deeper into these things, I'll share a little background of the 767. 767 Landing gears are a bit unusual. The MLG is tilted around 20 degrees forward. (exact degree may be 17-20 but I can't remember at this moment). The design team noticed that the nose kept pitching down on landing so that is why they are pitched that way. Turns out that the bogies (attachment assembly of landing gears that has more than 2 wheels) had less stress and strain on them because of the pitch design and a much smoother landing. Now that is how I remember it being explained and read up on it awhile ago. However, I also remember having heard that it was designed this way to fit in the tighter wheel wells. Both could be true, or either one. During this time of design, focus was on the fuel efficiency because of economic conditions and the oil market. Not sure how much that effected the design. You are going to find debates about this topic everywhere you see a gathering of aviation folks. It's almost always going to come up at some point. 🙂

When you could fly from JFK into Manhattan. New York Airways was established in 1949 as a mail and cargo carrier. Over time, it expanded its services to cater to passengers traveling to and from major airports in the greater New York City area. From its humble beginnings with the Sikorsky S-55 helicopter, which could accommodate eight passengers, New York Airways rapidly expanded its fleet. In 1956, the Sikorsky S-58, capable of carrying up to 12 passengers, was added. This growth continued with the introduction of the Vertol V-44, which could carry 20 passengers, and the Boeing Vertol BV 107-II, seating 25 passengers. The airline's last aircraft, the Sikorsky S-61, could accommodate up to 25 people, marking a significant milestone in its fleet expansion. The commercial helicopter service provided a fast, scenic, cost-effective airport commute option. However, there were downsides as well. The increasing fuel prices made profitability challenging to achieve. Helicopter noise posed a problem, and safety concerns were a significant issue. One of the most impressive helicopters in the world is without a doubt Sikorsky's CH-53K, also known as "the king's stallion". 🚁 𝗪𝗵𝘆? 🤔 The aircraft is one of the largest and most powerful helicopters ever built by the US. It has three powerful engines and can lift external loads of up to 36,000 pounds (16,330 kilograms) over a distance of 110 nautical miles (127 miles or 204 km on land) in high/hot conditions. 𝗧𝗼 𝗽𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗼𝗳 🚗 9 mid-size cars (3-4,000 pounds) 🐋 6 baby blue whales (5-6,000 pounds) 🐘 3 elephants (12,000 pounds) 🗽 10 times the torch of Lady Liberty (3,600 pounds) One of the most important parts in a helicopter to guarantee lift-off, are bevel gears. While LGA can certainly get very busy you may be asking yourself why this photograph makes the 150 acre airport look especially so. The answer is that this image was captured just a few days after the PATCO air traffic controllers strike began that year. None of the background aircraft are parked but all are awaiting departure clearance (with engines, of course, running the whole time) 1981, as you might imagine, was not a good year for U.S. Airlines. Delta, as usual in those days, managed an annual profit but it was very much an exception. 𝐋𝐞𝐭’𝐬 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐫, 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐰𝐞? 👒 In the early 1900s, as Wilbur and Orville Wright worked on their Wright Flyer, men commonly wore hats. When Wilbur traveled to France in 1908, he wore a newsboy cap that wouldn't blow off during flights, inspiring young men across the country to adopt this style due to his ‘celebrity’ status. Another pivotal moment in the hat evolution occurred in 1909 when French aviator Louis Bleriot crossed the English Channel. For his record-breaking flight, Bleriot wore a leather helmet and goggles to shield himself from oil splatter. This trend persisted through and beyond World War I, addressing the need for warmth in open-cockpit aircraft. At that time, most pilots were military officers who wore uniforms with round hats featuring a peaked front and a metal wire frame. However, as the world was edging towards the Second World War, radios began being fitted in planes, and aviators needed to start using headphones. This resulted in the removal of the wire support, creating a crushed hat appearance. 👩✈️👨✈️ Regarding commercial airline pilots, changes began in 1931 when Pan American World Airways initiated its flying boat service, referred to as "Clippers." By 1939, Pan Am introduced the Boeing 314 on routes between the United States and Europe, prompting a desire to move away from the military aesthetic. Pan Am chose to replicate naval officer uniforms, introducing white peaked caps to instill confidence in anxious passengers.
