DYING MATTERS AWARENESS WEEK: 6-12 May is Dying Matters Awareness Week, an annual initiative organised by the charity Hospice UK to get people talking about death, dying and grief. This year the theme - ‘the way we talk about Dying Matters’ - focuses on the language we use and conversations we have around death and dying. Hospice UK says: "Honest, timely conversations about death and dying are essential to good end of life care. Yet all too often barriers, including lack of confidence, taboos around discussing death, and confusion about who should be having these conversations mean patients, carers and families may not understand what is happening, or get all the information and support they need. The brilliant people who work in our 200+ hospices around the UK are experts in death, dying, and end of life care. So we’re asking them to share their tips and advice on how to start honest, transparent conversations about death and dying to help people feel informed, supported, and empowered at one of the most vulnerable times of their lives. Here at Willen Hospice, We are passionate about ensuring that our patients and their families receive the right communication about death, dying and grief from us. At the right time and in a way that works for them. If they understand more about the process of dying, what may happen and when, they can use time spent on from worries to making memories. Especially when time is precious and every moment matters. Today marks the beginning of Dying Matters Awareness Week, running between 6 and 12 May Dying Matters is an annual campaign driven by Hospice UK to create an open culture in which we’re comfortable talking about death, dying and grief. This year’s theme, The way we talk about Dying Matters, focuses on the language that we use, and conversations we have, around death and dying – specifically between our incredible healthcare professionals and our patients, their carers and their families. In an unusual departure from my typical content, I seldom engage in fundraising appeals. However, we find ourselves at a critical juncture in societal norms, where sustaining a household on a single income is becoming perilously challenging, particularly for those opting to be homemakers. This circumstance demands reflection and ought to serve as a wake-up call, though perhaps my sentiment is tinged with nostalgia. Yet, that is not the crux of the matter. Consider the timeless lifestyle of a dedicated Fire Department serviceman in a highly esteemed department. As we are well aware, these selfless individuals never receive adequate compensation for the risks they undertake. Now, picture one of these heroes, who daily sacrifices for the greater good, confined to a hospital bed due to multiple viruses and infections. This not only jeopardizes his livelihood but also affects his nascent family, including a young child and an impending addition. This is a pivotal moment that calls for collective support. Someone who dedicates their life to saving others now finds themselves incapacitated for weeks without adequate assistance. Where is our reciprocation for the person who puts their life on the line to save lives? This is not a plea for funding but a plea for visibility. This week is Dying Matters Awareness Week, a campaign run by the charity Hospice UK to make things better for people who are dying or grieving. This year's campaign focuses on how we talk about dying during end-of-life care, ensuring everyone understands what's happening and gets the support or care they need. Talking about death makes some of us very uncomfortable, yet the impact of not having the conversation can cause stress and anguish when someone is dying and after they pass away. Even writing these social posts is difficult; finding the right words (are there any right words?) takes a lot of rewriting, but we need to flip this on its head and make death part of our everyday conversations, so we're clear on what needs to happen at the end of someone's life and to support those affected by it. Did you know that Children’s hospices rely on grants and charitable donations to provide vital services to children and their families - from play to medical care, to respite care and advocacy? Without services such as these provided to my family and our daughter, I don’t know how we would have coped during her short life. Community NHS support is a postcode lottery with long waiting lists, so the closure of a children’s hospice should worry everyone - even if you’re fortunate enough to never need one. What can you do? ✅ Support your local hospice by taking part in fundraisers, volunteering or donating. £40 provides an hour of nursing care ✅ Follow and support charities like Together for Short Lives, which further supports families of children with life-limiting conditions (for example, we were gifted a mini break to make memories and received the Butterfly Fund to assist with funeral costs) ✅ Write to your MP and sign petitions to ensure vital services aren’t lost and vulnerable children can live their lives with dignity and care.
