Quite recently, we published our sustainability report. In the meantime, we received a lot of positive feedback. I was very encouraged. Like many other players who want to shape the future, we are committed to the importance and relevance of this topic.
An integrated approach to sustainability will have a significant impact on Lohmann's business model soon. Apart from the fact that many societies overuse their natural ecosystems, a lack of consideration for sustainability or climate change will lead to many new risks. Rising raw material prices and disrupted supply chains are only one obvious aspect of this, but do not uncover the true negative potential of long-term climate change and its impact on the foundations of our common economy and actions.
In this respect, we are working on our integrated vision for a more sustainable future, which has also become the basis of our sustainability roadmap. Sustainability, or more precisely ESG, is currently high on the agenda and one of the main pillars of our current corporate strategy Lohmann Beyond.
We regard sustainability as both, a compulsory exercise and a voluntary activity. The future duty in a social market economy - but strictly speaking in any form of a liberal economic system - will be to recognize that economic development is not necessarily combined with growth in the flow of goods and quantitative consumption, but rather to realize qualitative and profitable economic development. However, this is not a contradiction or a revolution, as Schumpeter already noted many many years ago. The “freestyle” involves linking profitable business models with a measurable contribution to social welfare. Many needs in our markets are now also driven by sustainability. They often redefine the basic requirements and rules of a market. However, they often also offer growth potential because the needs are not yet fully addressed. These are great opportunities that change brings with it.
Therefore, our goal is to spend more time on strategic reflection about sustainability and align our organisation’s operations with sustainability targets and leverage ESG skills to strengthen the foundation of our organisation’s future growth strategies.
