I often read posts on LinkedIn about how people are struggling with their job hunting. Endless application submissions, building networking connections, asking for referrals, and never hearing back from recruiters about interview schedules... Sound familiar? Are we really incompetent in today's job market? Why does everyone have fancy LinkedIn titles? The truth is employers want to tighten their labor budget by spending the least amount possible to hire the best candidate. This prompts job seekers to decorate their resumes with matching keywords to align with listed qualifications on job posts. However, this process can be problematic. As talent and employment professionals, we recognize the importance of maintaining an active candidate pool. However, posting ghost jobs can harm our companies' reputations and distort the current job market. When I began my career as a recruiter, the practice of posting jobs solely to build candidate pools or gather market insights didn’t even have a name. Coming from an agency background, it was a common tactic—presenting candidates with positions that often didn’t exist to “keep the pool fresh”. While it made sense in that context, it raises questions in today’s fast-paced, technology-driven job market. In an era where transparency is valued, leading with honesty is paramount. I now prefer to invite candidates to submit their resumes for future opportunities rather than stringing them along with ghost postings. It’s about positioning myself as a resource rather than offering elusive opportunities.
