They will need a spare one of Nantucket as it’s being used for bodyboarding there; half of it ….. the ship - I would surmise - is being utilized in the extensive offshore wind energy buildout off Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, No-Mans Land, the Elizabeth Islands Block Island Long Island and point south…. In Aberdeen yesterday to support the breakfast meeting for the launch of the OW Ocean Winds Supply Chain Impact Report. As described by OW UK Country Manager Adam Morrison, the report looks "under the bonnet' to showcase 104 Scottish and UK supply chain companies who worked on Moray East and Moray West projects. The specially invited audience also heard from Maggie McGinlay, CEO of Energy Transition Zone Ltd and Aberdeenshire Councillor Doreen Mair who spoke about the impact of the OW O&M base in Fraserburgh Harbour and how it also galvanised an even more ambitious expansion of the harbour that would benefit not only offshore wind but the important existing fishing industry and boat repair and maintenance businesses in the town. The OW Supply Chain Impact Report highlights 15 of the companies and 4 ports and harbours as well as listing all 104 UK supply chain companies. The list includes 64 Scottish companies, 65% of whom are DeepWind members (half of the total 104 companies are members), so it was a great showing for the cluster. Four companies had stands at the event and it was great to see Balmoral Comtec, Clarksons, Helix Robotics Solutions and Utility ROV Services Ltd being able to talk about their roles in the Ocean Winds supply chain. A big thanks to Roger McMichael and Kate Miller of OW for all their hard work on the launch. Other DeepWind members showcased in the report include Siemens Gamesa, JDR Cable Systems, Seaway7, Siemens Energy, Global Energy Group, EODEX, Vysus Group, Robertson Group, Port of Nigg, Port of Cromarty Firth, Fraserburgh Harbour and Buckie Harbour. For any Lincolnshire contacts I wanted to share this… Press release issued by No Pylons Lincolnshire to all media PRESS RELEASE FROM NO PYLONS LINCOLNSHIRE A campaign group opposed to an 87-mile swathe of hundreds of huge pylons through Lincolnshire has gathered 2,000 supporters in just a few days. No Pylons Lincolnshire was launched on Facebook when National Grid announced its pylon plan to the public last month (January). Within days of being alerted to the scheme, called the Great Grid Upgrade, concerned residents had posted thousands of worried comments and questions on the new Facebook site. No Pylons Lincolnshire is challenging National Grid’s preferred overhead cabling scheme in favour of one of the other options National Grid put forward - taking the cables under the sea. It is also campaigning for a faster, better, cheaper future-proofed integrated offshore network providing “plug and play” for other offshore wind farms as they come on-line, as has been done in Ireland, Holland and Denmark. The new cables are needed to bring to shore power generated by wind turbines out at sea. National Grid wants to bring a new overhead line from Grimsby to Walpole - 87 miles using at least 420 pylons. Much of it will take up grade 1 agricultural land used to grow food. No Pylons Lincolnshire founder member Cat Makinson said: “We are incredibly busy gathering information and evidence to press for the undersea option. National Grid has opted for what it believes is the cheapest option, but it is the most environmentally-damaging . Our focus at the moment is to get the public to engage in the current consultation process and make their views known to National Grid before the deadline of March 13 which it has set.” Group member Andrew Malkin said: “Alone we are just ‘skint little people’, but recent events have shown that in a David and Goliath battle like this people power can come to the fore and the skint little people can win. Please make your opposition to pylons known while you have the chance.” Only people close to the corridor chosen by National Grid for the pylons have so far received consultation material from National Grid, but anyone concerned about 50-metre tall pylons - equivalent to 15-storey buildings or as tall as Nelson’s Column - can make their views known. Cat said: “We fully support the generation of green and renewable energy, but object to trashing the landscape in order to then deliver it to us when there is an affordable and viable alternative option.” “National Grid is a private foreign-owned company which does this work for profit. In the past five years it has paid its shareholders almost £9 billion. It will earn from these cables for decades as its customers, the energy generators, pay National Grid to use them, so it can afford to do the right environmental thing and put this under the sea and not maximise its profits and trashing our landscape in the process.”

Developing cetacean-friendly guidelines, from whale watching to offshore wind farm operation - Frontiers in Marine Science: Developing offshore wind farms may impact cetaceans due to vessel collisions and underwater noise. Therefore, it is critical to protect cetaceans while developing offshore wind farms. We first studied the code of conduct/guidelines for whale watching and then interviewed members of the local whale-watching industry to learn about the interaction between cetaceans and vessels. After that, we compared current whale-watching guidelines in Taiwan with 69 published guidelines from other countries and locations, then developed guidelines for the offshore wind farm industry. The results show that rules related to approaching and interacting with cetaceans in Taiwan are similar to those in other countries. However, swimming with cetaceans and approaching calves are prohibited in Taiwan. From the survey of the whale-watching industry, most whale-watching guidelines in Taiwan were found to be feasible, and the guidelines should be described in the premise with different phenotypic traits of various cetaceans. Based on the whale-watching guidelines, we developed a code of conduct for protecting cetaceans from the impact of vessels, specifically in offshore wind farm operations in Taiwan. https://lnkd.in/ecsqmDSq

In other offshore news, here are some recent highlights from the industry: 🌊 TDI-Brooks has updated its 50-year-old survey vessel, the Gyre, to improve seabed mapping capabilities before deploying it to West Africa. The Gyre, which was built in 1973, received substantial improvements at Las Palmas, including the installation of a new KONGSBERG EM-304 MKII multibeam echosounder, which allows for high-resolution seabed mapping from 10 to over 11,000 metres. After three years in the Americas, the sailboat has returned to Dakar, Senegal. TDI-Brooks also recently overhauled the RV Nautilus, formerly known as the Nautical Geo, for offshore wind work off the East Coast of the United States. ⚡ On June 1, CEMRE SHIPYARD in Türkiye launched the world's first e-methanol-fuelled service operation vessel (SOV). Developed by ESVAGT A/S and Ørsted, the NB1094 SOV incorporates hybrid, methanol-fuelled dual engines and batteries, decreasing CO2 emissions by about 4,500 tonnes per year. The 93-meter vessel, which can accommodate 124 passengers, will be built under DNV classification and sail under the Danish flag. Ørsted will deliver e-methanol derived from wind energy and biogenic carbon. When it is operational in 2024, it will serve the Hornsea 2 offshore wind farm in the North Sea. A second methanol-powered SOV is planned for 2026, operating from Ørsted's UK East Coast Hub in a 10-year contract. 🌀 Despite other power facilities shutting down, Prime Energy (Prime Energy Resources Development B.V.)'s Malampaya gas field maintained full natural gas supply to Philippine power plants during Typhoon Aghon. The field's infrastructure, intended to endure extreme weather, provided steady electricity to Luzon, which relies on Malampaya for 20% of its power. Prime Energy plans to invest $800 million to extend the field's life by drilling new wells in 2025.
