Happy Women's History Month! Women's History Month, celebrated every March, serves as an important reminder of the power of partnership, female collaboration, and community. For over forty years, our chef/owners Susan Feniger and Mary Sue Milliken have sustained one of the most enduring business partnerships in LA and beyond. Feniger and Milliken teamed up in 1981 to open City Café in Los Angeles, and have since founded Mundo Hospitality Group with locations in Santa Monica (SOCALO), Las Vegas (Border Grill, BBQ Mexicana, Pacha Mamas) and most recently Palm Springs (Alice B.). From first meeting as the only women chefs in a Chicago kitchen to being the first women to run a restaurant on the Las Vegas Strip, uplifting and championing women has long been their passion. In late 2020, Mary Sue co-founded Regarding Her, a national nonprofit driven by women restaurateurs on a mission to empower and advance female entrepreneurs and leaders in food and beverage. “Our ambition is to create an industry we want for ourselves and for future generations—one we can be proud of and in which women thrive.” - Mary Sue Milliken Today, Regarding Her Food's 4th annual monthlong festival returns with an array of amazing events and collaborations!

Are you carrying your fair share? We all have plenty of time to put our recent words, likes and shares into action before the next #internationalwomensday. That’s why I sat down with my colleague, friend and mentor, Sarah Gingrich. As the Co-Leader of Fasken’s firmwide Capital Markets and M&A practice, she has a valuable perspective on the unique professional challenges faced by women. Sarah has built a practice with her attention to every detail of client service, so we focused on how men can demonstrate allyship at an elemental level. Here is a (definitely not exhaustive) set of jumping off points for men that want to make a positive difference for their female colleagues in even the smallest of ways: 🙋♂️ Put your hand up and volunteer at the office, especially for charitable, social and other activities that might be more traditionally associated with women (i.e. if you didn’t volunteer for the bake sale, ask yourself why). 🎁 Organize cards, gifts and flowers for lifecycle events. Women disproportionately lead these initiatives and they are opportunities for men to demonstrate equity, foster connections with their #team and acknowledge successes and challenges in their colleagues’ lives outside the office. 💬 MOST importantly, actively mentor women. While men cannot replicate or replace woman-to-woman #mentorship, we can and should intentionally, repetitively and meaningfully mentor the women on our team. With disproportionately less women in leadership positions, those leading women are inundated with requests for mentorship – so anything that men do to support junior women will inevitably lighten the load at the senior level while developing the next generation of female leadership. ☕️ And gentlemen, let’s all jump up to pour the coffee in our client meetings. As Women's History Month winds down, I’m reflecting—not just on the iconic shakers and movers who've left their indelible mark on history—but on the gritty, everyday hustle that defines the paths of women today. From Shirley Chisholm's unapologetic claim to her seat at the table, to Jeanette Rankin's trailblazing presence in Congress, and the unwavering voice of the Notorious RBG, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, in the halls of justice—they've all thrown down the gauntlet for us to pick up. These were my hero's growing up (clearly I was a kid who loved history, politics, and the rule of law) because they fought tirelessly for their beliefs, even when it was unpopular, while also finding common ground with their ideological opposites. But let's talk about today. About me, you, us—balancing on the tightrope of progress and tradition, percariously balancing work, life, home. I'm a CEO and business owner, but before the titles, I'm a mother teaching my daughter the dance of defiance and grace. How to throw punches in silk gloves, to chase her dreams with a ferocity that's both elegant and relentless, always reminding her that she is powerful and strong. This month is a nod to our past, but I'm hell-bent on making sure it fuels our future. A future where ‘woman’ is synonymous with 'powerhouse.' Whether you're wearing a tiara or a power suit, I hope you know your worth is non-negotiable, your place is wherever you damn well choose it to be. As the curtain falls on this month, let's not take our foot off the gas. Let’s crank it up—make every month, every day, every minute count. As my corporate hero Indra Nooyi would say, I have won the lottery of life. Earlier this year (how is it already May tomorrow?), I had an amazing Leap Day—a day spent celebrating women and our allies. In the early afternoon, I was thrilled to be inducted into Ragan Communications’ Hall of Fame at the Top Women in Communications luncheon in NYC. The event was jam-packed with incredible communicators, many of whom I have had the pleasure of crossing paths with at various points in my career. In the evening, I attended the Girls with Impact Gala in Greenwich Harbor, where I was blown away by the incredible potential and power of the next generation of female entrepreneurs. Their pitches and projects were full of creativity and passion—and solved real problems. Indra Nooyi, a top woman in business and former CEO of PepsiCo, was honored at the event and shared three lessons that have helped her in her career and life. I’m loosely recapping them here: --We should listen to our audiences and put ourselves in their shoes. Whether concerning a call for healthier snacks or tobacco harm reduction, listening to real-world people-to-people exchanges is more invaluable than any data point. (I’ve seen the truth in that firsthand during the ongoing “listening tour” I’ve undertaken on behalf of PMI to inform our military veterans support efforts.) --We should look with gratitude on those who have led the way, recognizing our parents, mentors, and teachers—everyone who has contributed to setting us on a path to love the present and look with ambition to the future. --We should have one foot on the gas and one on the brake (though not while you’re driving, please). This means consuming a broad range of information but taking the time to go beyond the headlines and dig deep into the facts. And why not turn the internet off for a week from time to time? International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month are in our rearview mirror, but that’s no reason to stop celebrating. My hope is that we’ll make it less about commemorating past achievements and more about offering a “hand up” to all those talented, ambitious, and brave girls and women who are chasing their dreams and making a positive difference in the world.

When I plan my women’s self-love retreats, there’s one thing I do with intention from the very start of the planning process. I carefully curate my panel of speakers to be representative of real life. What I mean is this: I am a mixed race woman. I didn’t see Latinas in business growing up. I didn’t see black faces on speaking panels in high school. I didn’t see women of color being celebrated until I was an adult. And even now, when I look at events happening in my region, the panels being advertised are typically 90% white faces. This is not representative of real life. So as long as I am hosting retreats, my speakers will be diverse. I will seek out women of color who are experts in their fields so that I can lift up their voices, and so that anyone considering buying a ticket to my retreat will feel that they are represented. They will look at the lineup and say “yes, I know I will be welcome here.” Because my retreats are designed to be a safe space for women from all walks of life to be vulnerable, share their lived experiences, and learn new perspectives. And it’s a lot harder to learn new perspectives when everyone in the room looks like us.

For the past five months, I've been guiding groups of women through curated event experiences across Seattle as a facilitator for RealRoots, a company that helps women make new friends. Being a guide speaks to the R.A./camp counselor inside of me, and allows me to tap into the way I enjoy expressing my creativity, which is through movement, curiosity in conversation, and writing. I closed yesterday's dinner series with my favorite reflection activity -- one I recommend to anyone leading groups just getting to know each other. Every woman had a chance to be in the spotlight with the rest of the group taking turns sharing a positive memory or exchange they've had over the course of the series. I love this activity because it allows participants to share how they see each other, and everyone leaves the experience feeling warm and fuzzy. What I enjoy most is watching people in the room share from their hearts -- good facilitation feels like watching people fall in love in slow motion. As I listened to the women reflect on their favorite experiences from our series, I realized the moments where I allowed myself to put my own spin on things and go "off-script" turned out to be the most enjoyable moments for the group. Self-trust plays a huge part in creating a safe environment for others to build trusting relationships, and I felt that in a big way with this cohort. When it was my turn in the hotseat, one of the women in my group shared one of the highest compliments that affirmed that this kind of work is aligned with my purpose. She shared: "Whenever you ask me a question, it pulls something out of me I didn't know I wanted or needed to share. It challenges me in a way that feels encouraging and supportive." My experience as a guide has not only been a practice of presence but also an exercise in self-trust, and I'm excited to continue building that muscle in my next series!
