David Burkus' Ted Talk is food for thought around pay inequity and the gender pay gap. While I think companies with thin margins will struggle initially to implement this, as will companies with a global presence that have regional differences in pay scales, it is a worthwhile conversation. I definitely see a scenario where some of the solutions proposed helps conversations around fair compensation, with possible implications for employee engagement and productivity. At minimum, companies should be looking at gender pay gap, and asking the question, "would I be comfortable transparently sharing this data point?" If not, it's probably time to take a hard look at compensation practices.
It's time to have the salary talk — with your colleagues.

I've been a huge proponent of this for years and for all the reasons that is talked about here. Pay Transparency between peers: - Minimizes the gender pay gap. - Assists employees in understanding their positions pay scale - Which in turn reduces the number of employees that feel they are underpaid (even if they are at market rate or over) - Reduces the rate of turnover due to pay As well as several other benefits. Your salary is not a secret worth keeping, be comfortable talking about what you make.

Do you think you’re underpaid? Before negotiating for a higher salary, ask yourself: What message are you sending your future employer when negotiating for a higher salary? When you apply for a job, your future employer asks for your desired salary. This is your opening bid for your salary negotiation. As you fill in this number, you are telling your next employer either the market rate for the position or your starting price for negotiations. Be aware: your future employer is gaging your motivation based on this number. If you enter in your current salary or the position’s market wage, you aren’t motivated by your salary. Your motivation is based on your environment - job tasks and colleagues - not your salary. Don’t be afraid to demonstrate that you’ve done your position research! You know the market rate for your job. You are confident in your abilities and you know your worth. Be confident when you’re filling out your next job application - demonstrate you know the position’s market rate and your value! #jobadvice #careersdvice #jobsalary #jobresearch https://lnkd.in/g7fxaPnK
