Us 'Muricans love idealizing farmers & ranchers as the salt of the earth, common man. I'd argue the reality of 2024 agriculture is much closer to Catch 22's Major Major Major Major's father who was "a long-limbed farmer, a God-fearing, freedom-loving, law-abiding rugged individualist who held that federal aid to anyone but farmers was creeping socialism."; than anything from a Normal Rockwell painting or Little House on the Prairie. Actually working on a ranch is a massive, Sisyphean pain-in-the-ass. There's always something to do & things to fix. I spend about 90 mins each morning cutting & spraying invasive huisache & mesquite trees. As soon as I finish one pasture, I'm back to the original pasture to spray seedlings of previous years. This has made me a bit of an expert on various sprayers (now I can be an #ExpertWitness on #Firearms, #Explosives & sprayers!). At first I figured I needed an "industrial" grade sprayer, so I spent ~$80 at Tractor Supply Company. That lasted about 60 days before dying & needing parts more expensive than a new sprayer. I tried various other sprayers from Amazon, The Home Depot, and other retailers; all of which last about the same 60-90 days before breaking. I've probably spent $400 on various sprayers over the last few years. But about a year ago I realized if they're all going to break at about the same time, I may as well go super cheap. So I bought this $10 sprayer from Dollar General & it's lasted through all manner of use & abuse, including rattling around in the bed of my truck in the summer sun for days at a time. Typically "you get what you pay for". But apparently not with sprayers.

Young couple w/ 3 toddlers bought 40 acres in 2021. He works in the poultry industry. Started a layer flock & they're selling eggs. First generation farmer status now. Thanks to his line of work & interests, they're set to take over some laying barn leases from older folks with no successors. They're working towards growing the layer operation so he can scale back/quit his day job. "Pulling the boat closer to the dock" so he can easily step from FT work (dock) to FT self-employed farmer (boat). Yet another example proving it is possible to be a first gen farmer. And this couple has a detailed, long term plan to make it feasible. I hope examples like this are viewed as encouragement to someone out there.

Happy 'Friday On The Farm!' This month's edition is about fencing corn fields for grazing. Once the harvest is done, we have the fun task of fencing off those corn fields. We put up temporary fences around cornfields, called hotwire fences, so the cattle can graze the corn kernels and cobs that were not picked up by the combine and eat some of the other parts of corn, too, like corn husks and corn stalks. Growers try to do everything they can to stop cherries from cracking or splitting, but interestingly, Dr. Lav Khot says grower decisions are influenced completely by emotion. “If there is a rain event, the farmer will become anxious, and they will hire pilots to fly the helicopter.” Dr. Khot wondered if he could help the cherry growers make their decisions based on real data instead. A somewhat common way to load a #potato planter, if you have a front end loader large enough, is a bucket extension that simply bolts on. Several years ago I designed and built this to load a #spudnik 8080 to save field congestion, travel time, and wear and tear on equipment. They happened to have a Michigan L190B hanging around so its 30 tons was plenty for the job.
