Did you know that CATTLEytics, led by Dr. Shari Van de Pol, won the Innovation Award at Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show (owned and operated by Glacier FarmMedia) for their ‘Moo to Do’ system? This awesome tool helps dairy farms with staff scheduling and task management. Dr. Van de Pol pointed out that managing schedules can be tricky on the farm, especially when using old methods like wall calendars. The ‘Moo to Do’ system makes it easier with data-driven insights, helping employees stay on top of their tasks and saving money for farms. Farmers can be heroes too! The national collective and led by Ben Ensor who chats about the challenges facing catchment groups now is insightful. What weve discovered in the last 5 yrs is that devotion, local knowledge,intricate systems understanding and a number 8 wire approach that leads to locally led groups getting stuff done faster, cheaper and with targeted precision can save public dollars and lead to genuine outcomes for nature, however as Ben noted: “The ability of the local groups to understand their landscape intimately and take an integrated approach can deliver more specific, well-invested solutions is essential. Ensor is also aiming to ensure the umbrella group gives more voice to rural communities in helping shape regulation and make them practical. “It is very much about having to work with government.” We all need to see environmental management continue to improve and get some of agriculture’s wicked problems controlled. “We still need regulations, but catchment groups can connect with a broad range of people and go further, faster than just regulations can.” he has plenty of first-hand experience with unworkable environmentally focused regulations on his own property…. “The worst ones for us have been the certified farm plans as they were proposed. With auditing the cost would have been horrendous.” He also hopes the collective can help build a national “dashboard” that provides at-a-glance information on how the farming sector is going on key environmental indicators for areas.

Walking SA attended the Conservation SA 'Civil Society Lunch with the Premier'- a lunchtime discussion with the Premier of South Australia, Peter Malinauskas, about the needs of civil society to provide for healthy democracies. As a member of the conservation council, Walking SA were invited to participate in the discussion. Key takeaways are: * The need to strengthen civil society to find common ground and not enable divisive interests to prosper at the expense of the common good. * The role of nature, heritage and culture as fertile ground to bring people together and to ensure a sustainable and equitable future. * The need to reprioritise government spending to invest in the very things otherwise taken for granted - think re-distribution of wealth, preservation of natural resources and wild places, and environmental and cultural stewardship. Landowners leading at a local level innovating and inspiring change in a short space of time has got to add value to our shared NZ future. While this is not the voice of all growers/ landowners on the farming continuum- catchment groups represent leaders, innovators, visionaries and agile enthusiasts who want to see a better future for NZ. This is the voice of NZ Catchment Communities at a national level. I’m certain their voice will resonate with many of the NGOs as well who have been looking for leadership in the rural space that cares for nature, freshwater and climate resilience. Regulation has a place, and so do slow movers and laggards, but good land stewards making system change in a safe space led by technically competent teams that provide safe space are a bridge between adaptive agility and regulatory pressure.
