According to the NYT, the bomb which did such massive damage at the refugee camp in #Rafah was an American-designed and manufactured GBU-39. The GBU-39 is a 110kg, "precision-guided glide bomb." According to the USAF (af.mil): "The GBU-39B Small Diameter #Bomb, or SDB, is an extended range ... guided munition. The #SDB relies on the Global Positioning System to provide navigation to the target .... SDB target coordinates are loaded into the weapon before release either on the ground or in the air by the aircrew. Once the weapon is released, it relies on GPS/INS to self-navigate to the desired impact point." GBU-39s are normally used because they a precision, guided munition and are precise enough to minimize collateral damage. Probable Conclusion: Precise coordinates for the refugee camp in Rafah were loaded into the guidance system on the ground - before takeoff. This was an intentional, precision strike.

This is an excellent example of why there is no such thing as a "simple" military operation. Even air drops of palletized supplies, something the Air Mobility Command does every single day, has a team of supporting units and capabilties. It's also something that sets the United States Air Force apart from our adversaries - the ability to conduct complex, multi-layered and multi-domain operations globally. The world is becoming increasingly dangerous, and it's incumbent on the West to remain steadfast in our defense of each other and our interests around the globe. It's also a cautionary tale from history. In the 1930s there were a not small number of people who believed what happened in Europe or Asia was none of America's concern. Brazilian Army to get UH-60M’s In a presentation to the Brazilian Committee on Foreign Relations and National Defense on April 17, Army Commander General Tomás Miguel Miné Ribeiro Paiva announced that the Brazilian Army will purchase 12 Sikorsky UH-60M Black Hawk utility helicopters to replace its current fleet of eight HM-3 Cougar and four HM-2 Black Hawk helicopters. On Friday the U.S State of Department has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Brazil of UH-60M Black Hawk Helicopters and related elements of logistics and program support for an estimated cost up to $950 million. This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by helping to improve the security of an important regional partner that is a force for political stability and economic progress in South America. This proposed sale of UH-60 helicopters will increase Brazil’s capability to provide troop transport, border security, medical evacuation, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, search and rescue, and peacekeeping support. This proposed sale will also promote the U.S. and Brazil’s goal of greater military interoperability. Brazil will have no difficulty absorbing this equipment into its armed forces.
