At CES 2024, #Hyundai and #XPeng both showed off their latest flying car concepts. Hyundai's Supernal division unveiled the S-A2, an upgraded electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. XPeng, meanwhile, presented the AeroHT eVTOL, a modular flying car concept that consists of a ground module and an air module that can be combined and separated automatically. Hyundai's #Supernal S-A2 The S-A2 is a six-seater eVTOL with a range of 250 miles (402 kilometers). It has four large rotors that are mounted on the wings and two smaller rotors on the tail. The S-A2 is designed to be used for air taxi services, and Hyundai plans to begin commercial operations in 2025. XPeng #AeroHT eVTOL The AeroHT eVTOL is a four-seater eVTOL with a range of 100 miles (161 kilometers). It has eight rotors that are mounted on the wings and four smaller rotors on the tail. The AeroHT eVTOL is designed for personal use, and XPeng plans to begin production in 2025. Flying cars are still in their #early stages of development, but they have the potential to revolutionize transportation. eVTOLs could provide a quick and convenient way to get around congested cities, and they could also be used to transport people to remote areas. However, there are still many challenges that need to be addressed before flying cars can become a reality. One challenge is safety, as eVTOLs need to be able to operate safely in all weather conditions. Another challenge is regulation, as there are currently no clear rules governing the operation of eVTOLs. Despite the challenges, flying cars have the potential to change the way we travel. Still cannot fathom why passengers first, when UAM is a niche premium market and $3 per seat mile (vs. ~60c per mile for Tesla Model S) plus landing fees etc, is still unaffordable for the average person, when an airport train is less than $20. The smart aerospace companies are focusing on far less risky (reputational and financial) cargo first After almost 3 decades since the first autonomous flight by a Boeing UAV (RQ-3 Darkstar in 1996), even the military have yet to transport troops over an unpopulated test range, but Boeing's Wisk wants to fly the public over populated urban areas without a pilot in the cockpit. While autonomous flight systems complimenting a human pilot in the cockpit is likely to safer that either just autonomous or pilot in the cockpit, human pilots safely land aircraft on daily basis with electrical, mechanical and systems failures and faults, so given the recent Cruise and the Boeing Starliner software glitche, is an AFS really safer than a human pilot in the cockpit? Is it once again an ailing Boeng trying to play catch-up again as Airbus already demonstrated ATTOL on an A350 airliner in 2020?
