Why Did Vinesh Phogat Weighed In over the 100 gram limit? In some heartbreaking news, Vinesh Phogat, India's Olympic hopeful has been disqualified from the Olympics for weighing in with more than the permissible 100 grams limit. In sports with weighted categories, it is a common practice for athlete to have weight fluctuations of between 4-5 kgs between the time of weighing in and the time of competition. No athlete fights or competes at the exact weight of the category but their medical teams generally have expert guidance in how to safely manage this fluctuation. This is why even though this practice is so common, disqualification on the basis of weight is so rare. So what could have happened in Paris? I was in Paris yesterday and it was scorching hot. The Paris Olympics is said to be a green Olympics with no air-conditioning in the village and some venues. This reality is making it extremely difficult for athletes to keep cool and prepare adequately. My working theory is that in an effort to keep cool during the day but warm up adequately for her bout, her hydration consumption increased significantly but unknowingly. This is why despite there best efforts, they struggled to get that weight off. It is important to understand that athletes are masters of managing their food consumption especially during competition. For this to have happened, an unknown variable had to have been introduced into the mix, after all, she was 2kg's over weight. Dehydration makes the body retain water so when external conditions are forcing dehydration, the body starts to hold onto more water. It is definitely a sad day for Indian Olympics and my heart goes out to Vinesh. She is a true champion - both on and off the field. FEEL GOOD FRIDAY: TL;DR: Hyperice and the PGA TOUR have come a really long way together. And we are only just getting started. When I met Jason Stodelle MSPT, ATC, OCS for the first time on the PGA TOUR at the American Express in 2017, we were in a small RV dedicated to physio services for the players. I left behind our orginal Vyper 1 roller, a green Hypersphere and a stack of my business cards. Very quickly, players were texting weekly, “Hey, I got your number from the truck, can I buy…” and we were off to the races. Little did I know that my friends at Normatec had been doing the same thing (shout out: Dan Canina, Andrew Reed and Brendan Bergson). Since our partnership officially launched in 2020, the Tour has continued to up their Player Care initiative at every tournament. It’s a full wellness compound, including at least one gym, the physio/chiro truck, and, new this year, the Player Recovery Center (more Hyperice, cold plunge, and saunas). Every player now has access to everything they need to maintain, strengthen and recover right there on site. And we’re not stopping there, we have launched Caddie Recovery rooms this year at a growing number of tournaments. They’re a massive hit ( 👊🏻 Jake Newman). We have been lucky to be a part of this incredible transformation week in and week out over the last 7 years. It's great for some OREC sports to be in the Olympics and resulting growing interest. In particular, I think Sport "Speed" Climbing is a super spectator friendly competition. One on one with speed and heights. It has the chance to really increase exposure to more folks and, with it, based on man-made recreation infrastructure (climbing walls) - open climbing to more urban (i.e. higher population density and potential user volume locations). Which, in turn, will get more people climbing in general to support sport, industry, and related causes. Some of my favorite speed climbing events I've attended and watched were at the Tuck Fest at the US National Whitewater Center outside of Charlotte, NC. Their finals are during the live music at night with lighted (glowing) holds over water with no belay. You fall to a big splash (https://lnkd.in/gvntuhsP)! It's quite the spectacle and very worthwhile. https://lnkd.in/e7BqwGxn It's also great to see the paddling, biking, and other OREC type events that maybe aren't "mainstream" team sports, but do have high volume of usage. These activities can always use more public introduction and support to not only create the future competitors, but also create cyclical support for the infrastructure and related OREC industry, and its many causes through progression infrastructure that builds vested consumers and users.

Good luck to our British eventing team as the 3 day event gets underway in Paris today. Climatic conditions play quite a significant role in performance as high humidity means there is a lot of moisture in the air. High levels of air moisture can cause airways to swell, making breathing more challenging. The high humidity also reduces the effectiveness of evaporative cooling due to sweating. If in doubt as to whether the conditions are inappropriate to ride/compete, you can calculate the 'Comfort Index' for horses: "The temperature and the relative humidity as a percentage can be combined to calculate the comfort index for horses, Coleman explained. This number — the temperature in F° plus relative humidity — will assist in determining if it’s too hot to exercise a horse. If the sum is below 130, thermoregulation should not be a concern. When the comfort index is between 130 and 150, horses will sweat, but they can exercise without major problems. When the comfort index exceeds 150 and the humidity is greater than 75 percent, heat dissipation may be an issue and riders should monitor their horses carefully. If the comfort index exceeds 180, a horse should not be exercised, as it will be unable to dissipate enough heat to stay safe." The horses (and the riders) of Team GB are elite athletes and will no doubt be in the absolute best shape to deal with any conditions so we look forward to following them over the next few days. I am pumped to join the team as an Official HYROX North American Ambassador Hyrox is the global fitness race that is taking the world by storm.  It combines high-intensity interval training (HIIT), functional strength training, and endurance training. The race is designed to challenge participants' strength, power, endurance, and cardiovascular fitness. The race format is the same worldwide and takes place in large indoor venues. It consists of eight rounds, each with a 1 km run followed by a different functional exercise. The functional exercises include:  SkiErg, Sled push, Sled pull, Burpee broad jumps, Rowing, Farmers carry, Sandbag lunges, and Wall balls. The race is suitable for almost everyone and doesn't need to be completed under a specific time limit. There are four different categories to choose from: Open, Pro, Doubles, and Team Relay. In the Doubles division, participants can compete as an all-women, all-men, or mixed team. In a mixed event, the weights are the same as the women's singles pro category. Both members of the doubles team must complete all eight runs, but they can share the work at the functional fitness stations. HYROX embodies sport, camaraderie, fitness, inclusivity, competition, sportsmanship, and community to name a few. After a couple of years of judging events, this year I plan to rejoin the excitement as a participant and take on the GORUCK weight vest category as a personal challenge.
