A historical insight into the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, London . The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (#ETO) in #London has played a critical role in fostering bilateral ties between #HongKong and the #UK for decades. Its work representing Hong Kong's trade interests in negotiations has been invaluable, especially during periods of trade restrictions. Despite recent tensions, the ETO's longstanding contributions to the Hong Kong-UK relationship must not be overlooked. As author Regina Ip in her latest op-ed published in the South China Morning Post SCMP argues, it's important to take a balanced, long-term view rather than letting truth be obscured by rumours and emotions. The ETO's decades of work strengthening ties between the two sides should not be dismissed. Hong Kong trade office’s contributions to ties with UK mustn’t be forgotten https://lnkd.in/gQBWe-Vw

"Mid-July 2024 saw two major events on China’s economic and trade sectors. At the Third Plenum in Beijing, the Party-State presented options to fortify China’s economy by its 80th anniversary in 2029. At the same time in Brussels, the World Trade Organization (WTO) conducted its ninth biannual review of China’s trade policy. Countries around the world, including Australia, are deeply interested in how China’s economic trajectory will forge international trade relations into the future", discussed by Dr Scott Waldron and Dr Zhang Jing Read more at Australian Outlook 👇 https://ow.ly/A9L850TtVAF

My latest for Bloomberg News: Switzerland is moving ahead with plans to modernize its free trade agreement with one of its most important trading partners: China. But unlike a decade ago, when it was the first in continental Europe to celebrate the signing of an FTA with Asia’s rising export power, euphoria has given way to uncertainty as trade tensions between China and the West are intensifying. Certainly, the lifting of most tariffs helped solidify the two countries’ bilateral trade. A less expected outcome is that Switzerland became more of a solo runner than a trailblazer for the West - with Swiss businesses fearing to be squeezed between the superpowers.

Over 2,700 delegates from 1,300 companies across 33 countries and markets joined J.P. Morgan’s Global China Summit, now celebrating 20 years of exchange. It was enlightening to discuss the shifts to the international order now underway with Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Chinese Institute of Hong Kong’s 黄平 in a session moderated by James Sullivan, Head of Asia Pacific Equity Research. The state of global economic integration is facing challenges as the US-China strategic competition endures with concerns about Chinese overcapacity being debated. The latest US tariffs on China reflect the continued rise in industrial policy but affect products that are not currently being imported in large quantities, and these tariffs will be phased in over the next three years. New networks and alliances are emerging in the international order. Finding common ground is proving more challenging as highlighted in Dr. Huang Ping’s Dictionary of Misunderstandings here: https://lnkd.in/gpH4vpJt #jpmorgan #chinasummit
