It’s National Apprenticeship week this week and whilst I am on the train to London to watch one of my apprentices present at an Apprentice Taskforce event with Davies Talent Solutions at Lloyds of London, I figured it would be a really good time to reflect. Most of my adult life has been spent working in the insurance industry, and completing an apprenticeship of my own really set me up for a successful career in this great industry. I remember being a little unsure about enrolling on an apprenticeship in insurance and why wouldn’t I be. When I was leaving school there was a bit of a stigma around apprenticeships. My understanding of an apprenticeship was that you would be going to work for a local tradesman making cups of tea and doing a bit of labour for minimum pay. How wrong could I be! I decided to go for it, probably for the wrong reasons, as ultimately it seemed the best route to gain my professional qualifications, however what I actually gained was so much more than that. For me apprenticeships are how the insurance industry, and all industries for that matter, will continue to thrive by bringing ambitious individuals into the industry and providing them with not only the knowledge but also the skills and behaviours to drive the industry forward. One of the most rewarding feelings working in this industry is providing my learners with skills and behaviours that are often taken for granted, and watching them grow as individuals. #apprenticeships #Davies #insurance #insuranceindustry #nationalapprenticeshipweek #NAW2024

As National Apprenticeship Week wraps up, I'm looking back on the past year spent diving into the world of apprenticeships. Starting in this role I had no idea how much I’d get to work on topics of L&D. It has been a positive surprise though, given that continuous learning was actually the topic of my Master’s dissertation!   Working closely with the UK apprenticeships system has been both rewarding and enlightening. The complexity of the system is undeniable, yet there is so much opportunity in this space. Considering the current state of social mobility within the financial services industry it is important we continue working on increasing the numbers of apprentice starts. Apprenticeships offer a way for people from different backgrounds to start meaningful careers, bringing diversity and inclusivity to workplaces. They are also a brilliant way to upskill current staff, as the career stories posted on the Association of British Insurers page this week shows.   Best part about this week has been seeing so many familiar faces at all the events and webinars. This week is #NationalApprenticeshipWeek 2024, the 17th annual celebration of the value, benefits and opportunities that apprenticeships offer to individuals, businesses, and the wider economy. This year’s theme, “Skills for Life”, encourages people to consider how apprenticeships allow individuals to develop the skills, knowledge and experience to build a rewarding career, and aid businesses in developing their workforce’s skills to equip them for the future. To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, UKGI Learning Solutions have released a new course to support new entrants in developing skills and knowledge key to insurance broking: ⭐Insurance Broking- The Essentials!⭐ The insurance industry has long struggled to entice and retain new recruits to replenish a retiring workforce.
