A revolution in growing everything? Synthetic biology startups have created sustainable, bio-engineered fragrances, hair products, skin creams, replacements for polyurethane, leather, bricks, concrete and more. Multinationals @unilever @adidas @zara, among others, collaborate with biotech companies to produce fossil-fuel free plastics and materials. These Companies Are Making Leather Alternatives 🔍 How is it shaping up? - While many of the latest innovations blend waste materials with petroleum-based plastics, a handful of companies have managed to make truly plastic-free options. - Alongside burgers and mini carbon capture factories, fungi are also being used to make biomaterials - including alternatives to leather. Some are a blend of fungal mycelium and plastics, others are fully bio-based. - Some companies like Ananas Anam Ltd and DESSERTO are using other plant-based leathers- pineapple and cactus. - Cell-based leather: This is the smallest sub-segment of the space, which makes sense given the costs and scientific expertise involved. VitroLabs Inc is a US-based startup developing lab grown leather, through tissue engineering, as a solution to help fight climate change. This a great resource defining & clarifying the term “biomaterial”, which is being used a lot in Fashion and Textiles at the moment.

From cotton to spider silk and ‘leather’ alternatives made of out green waste: biomaterials entail a sheer innumerous variety of fascinatingly different materials which are combating waste and pollution 🌍✨ According to Textile Exchange, aligning with the global 1.5°C pathway necessitates a 45% reduction in raw material production by 2030. This transition hinges, in part, on the adoption of innovative materials that do not rely on virgin fossil fuels.  Many of these cutting-edge biomaterial innovations offer more sustainable alternatives, frequently incorporating waste inputs and employing processes that are inherently more efficient in terms of water, chemicals, and energy usage. However, with a plethora of “bio” terms (bioassembled, biosynthetic, biofabricated, etc) circulating among brands and consumers alike, it is important to approach these terms carefully and avoid blanket statements, especially as “bio” does not always mean better.
