Working as a technician on aircraft isn't just a job; it's a craft. Every day, I’m amazed by the complexity yet precision needed in aerospace assembly. When fitting components together, it strikes me that each piece, no matter how small, plays a critical role in the larger system. Each bolt, every panel, and wire are essential for the entire aircraft to function as it should. Much like in life, where even our smallest actions can have a significant impact. Picture this , missing a single bolt in an aircraft assembly could lead to catastrophic failures. Similarly, neglecting tiny details in our daily lives can snowball into bigger issues down the road. This attention to detail makes aerospace work relatable to everyone. Whether you're in aerospace or not, realizing the importance of every small task helps us appreciate our role in the world. Never stop learning. As technicians we must always learn and engage in training. Waiting until you struggle doing what we do may put you behind. Always stay a step ahead in growing.

Does this technician look happy? He absolutely dont. The every day stress that a technician has to be addressed. Or you will have a revolving door in your dealership. But, let's take a look at the situation. Time is money. And technicians pay a lot of money for tools which creates more stress. They aren't getting a return on their investment. That combined with the every day stress, and the body aches makes it look like a tough situation for them, and the Service Manager. Here is my tip of the day. It worked great for me. The tech who can perform the repair the quickest needs that job. And every one of those jobs. Too many cars? Rank the technicians on a scale. If the quickest tech isn't available, work the list from the top down. Before you know it, you have a shop full of producing technicians. Then everyone is happy.

AOGs. At some time most of us have done an AOG recovery and probably remember the first one. I've done to many to count but definitely remember the first one. End of the day shift after 10 hours, the phone goes DC9 AOG in CDG. Mobile/Laptop forget them. Microfiche, not a chance. Look at the defect copy the AMM and take the parts. "You coming Gaz" "Yes mate". You go, you troubleshoot and replace the valve had correctly worked it out before flying over. The buzz of first shot recovery is memorable. Gaz (RIP mate. Too young-Covid) was a mechanic I worked with often. The Mechanics whether licenced or not are the backbone of the line operation and to those Apprentices out there I advise work with the mechanics as often as you can. Often they choose not to be licenced but are happy with their role. They can teach and guide the young engineers coming into todays industry. (Not my photo).

Seems likes every company want/need you to have the SGTT classroom course for any technician work whatsoever, or they’re not interested. I understand and get that, but how is one supposed to actually get on the course 🤔. I’ve said to every company I’ve spoken to that I’ll pay for it myself if they could get me on it, they’re not interested, they just look for people with it already. Some companies do at least have the decency to inform you that they can’t offer you anything because of no SGTT, but most just ignore you. They must not consider the long list of transferable skills and other experience that you have built up over many years which may make you more suitable than someone with no real working experience but who has just been lucky enough for a company to put them through it, makes no sense to me. How can someone with over 20 years of experience (using myself as an example) working on the tools in many different industries be less suitable for a job than someone who’s just done some GWO’s and a 2 week course at Siemens, again, makes no sense. I have even emailed Siemens myself a few times over the years expressing my wish to do the course, to no avail. That all said, if anyone knows of any companies that would be willing to put me through the course or can help me in any way to get technician/inspection work then I’d very much appreciate it. TO ALL COMPANIES, there’s lots of good guys/gals out there with lots of experience and skills who just need an opportunity and would be a great asset to your company. Don’t discount them just because they haven’t done a 2 week course at Siemens, consider their WHOLE background and what they could potentially bring to your business, it’s not all about tightening bolts and changing oil etc. Please repost/share this to spread the word and hopefully help others in my position, of which I’m sure there’ll be many, thanks.
