At the Assistance League of Los Angeles we are deeply committed to empowering marginalized communities through a variety of impactful programs and initiatives.
Our mission is to improve the quality of the lives of at-risk children and families in our community through philanthropy, dedicated service and compassionate programs.
✔️Operation School Bell®: We provide new clothing, shoes, and school supplies to underserved children, ensuring they have the essentials to succeed academically and socially.
✔️Foster Children’s Resource Center: This initiative offers clothing, school supplies, and hygiene kits to children in the foster care system. By addressing these basic needs, we help foster children feel more secure and supported.
✔️Theatre for Children: We offer free live performances to thousands of children from low-income families, many of whom have never experienced live theatre before. This exposure to the arts enhances their creativity and cultural awareness.
✔️Preschool Learning Center: Our accredited preschool provides quality early childhood education to children from low-income families. We focus on preparing these young learners for kindergarten and setting a strong foundation for their future academic success.
Through these programs and more, we are dedicated to making a tangible difference in the lives of marginalized individuals and communities.

Celebrating School Governors' Awareness Day - The Power of Volunteering
As we mark School Governors' Awareness Day today, the 29th of February 2024, I am reminded of volunteer school governors' profound impact on our education system. Volunteering as a school governor has been an incredibly rewarding journey for me, and here are two reasons why I chose this path:
1. Making a Real Difference: Being a school governor allows me to contribute meaningfully to the educational journey of young minds. It's about ensuring our schools excel academically and providing a nurturing environment for all-round development.
2. Community Engagement: This role has allowed me to engage with our community more deeply, understanding its diverse needs and aspirations. It's about building bridges between schools and their communities, fostering a collaborative environment that enriches education for everyone.
I encourage professionals from all backgrounds to consider school and trust governance. It's a chance to give back, share your expertise, and shape our society's future. Let's spread the word and inspire more individuals to join this noble cause.

In creating the Bloomsburg Area YMCA - Community Resource Hub, our team has created five distinct goals that we aim towards every single day so that we can best serve ALL of Columbia and Mountour County residents.
The official unveiling of the CRH is coming soon, but in the meantime, our team is preparing by doing all we can to best understand the resources available.
GOALS:
1. Create a Community Hub that is designed to meet the everchanging needs of the community and provide safe, confidential services that strengthen family life and individual growth.
2. Serve more people through programs and services that fulfill community needs by being the premier provider of community programming.
3. Provide more Y-based counseling and services for children and adults in schools, homes and the community.
4. Foster connections between the YMCA and the Community by becoming a preferred community partner.
5. Broaden the ability to serve a larger audience by providing the resources needed in the community.

This is massive.
After our move, we went from a breakfast/snack/lunch/snack school to just a morning/afternoon snack school.
Both phenomenal (and fee paying) schools, but the difference is immense.
I am incredibly grateful to be in a position to have sent my daughter to the schools I have, and am by no means comparing my experience to the struggles others face, but even just this small change amounts to so much work.
For those that think it’s just “throwing food in a box”:
First it is ensuring you have said food to throw in a box.
Nutritious breakfast foods don’t travel well and/or are disproportionately messy to eat at school when dealing with 1-5 year olds.
Lunches? “Just use dinner food.”
Okay sure, let me figure out additional quantities to meals to ensure there are left overs that Little would be willing to eat, and eat cold.
Skipped a shop, because you figured you’d go next day when Little is at school, only to realize you now don’t have a lunch option?
It is a MASSIVE change even to those not facing food instability.
Have y’all ever been Hangry? Or had a hangry co-worker you’ve thrown a candy bar at to get them out of the rut and be productive?
Now imagine that feeling as a kid supposed to sit and patiently learn all while dealing with all the other concerns and struggles hormones provide.
I’m sure sure there will be naysayers and those bemoaning “hand outs” etc., but the joy this seemingly simple change has brought me on behalf of children and adults I’ve never met and will likely never meet, helps me believe that my hope for humanity is still alive!

Our school district announced that starting next year, all students will be able to receive a free breakfast and lunch every day at school.
I’m celebrating for all those kids who will now have no-questions-asked access to two meals a day.
And I am celebrating for all the families for whom this will be a lift of multiple varieties of burdens.
Whether it’s the burden of affording the food, or planning for and providing it daily for kids before and as they head out the door, this benefits all families, working parents and otherwise.
When we support kids, we support working families.
It takes a village.
