Hey area employers and community at-large—we have a few questions. With changes in Indiana's high school graduation requirements, the need for work-based learning opportunities is on the verge of exploding. Employers, how can we (the community) support you? How do we make this work? What do you need to bring students into your workplace? Community, what ideas do you have to help solve this conundrum? GO! Enormous thanks to Diana Beech and Lewis Cooper for leading our plenary session 'System Reboot' in which we've looked at shifting policy on all of tertiary education, driven in part by a new government, but also by demographic change, and changing student expectation among other things. HE can be assertive about its ability to contribute to new missions around public health and wellbeing, safer streets and community cohesion, leadership of the green transition, regional economic growth, and opportunity for all. Estates teams need to be ever better at 'sweating the assets'. Lifelong learning means our estates need to be dynamic and able to shift to involve and inspire the 18 year old undergraduate, but also the 30 or 40 years old looking for CPD. What is on the cards in case of rationalisation of estates, or centralisation of back office functions? How do we manage the impact on staff and students, and including around wellbeing? Thankyou so much to both our lead speakers for such a broad-ranging opening session. What did you learn and what is the thinking that you'll be taking back to your team?

🚢 Ghostwriter for Rural County Govs 👻 | 🏆 Reeds Award Recipient | 🏛️ Written for Rural Counties, U.S. Congressmen, Political Candidates, State Orgs, PACs | 🗽 Passionate about responsive local governance
🏛️ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗪𝗮𝘆 𝗧𝗼 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘆 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 I love learning about how we govern ourselves at the local level. Unfortunately, when I first got interested in county government, I had a hard time figuring out where to start. So, if you are trying to learn more about county government, here's 4️⃣ ways to get started: (links will be in the comments) 1. 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗗𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: History of County Government Part I - It's from the Nevada Association of Counties. Each state has a membership association like this that helps provide networking and education opportunities for county officials and staff. 2. 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗧𝘂𝗯𝗲 𝗩𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼: Why Counties Matter - This short video by the National Association of Counties (NACo) gives a short overview of the main services provided at the county level. NACo was founded in 1935 and represents all U.S. counties, supporting 40,000 elected officials and 3.6 million county employees. It advocates for local interests in federal policy and addresses issues like homeland security, drug abuse, and healthcare access. 3. 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗧𝗼 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗣𝗼𝗱𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁: And if you really want to start going down the rabbit hole, check out Govlaunch. You can learn about how local government around the world is embracing innovation to serve their communities. 4. 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗡𝗲𝗿𝗱 𝗢𝘂𝘁: Running out of summer time fun with your kiddos? Learn about county government with them with iCivics! Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor founded iCivics in 2009 after seeing a lack of understanding about the working of government and the resulting disengagement. There's some great learning resources and a variety of online games all about civics! These 4️⃣ resources will accelerate your learning process. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗅 They usually occur twice a month and most are live-streamed & uploaded to youtube, so you can catch one from the comfort & convenience of your home. Or even from work, like I did once. Although I don't recommend trying to listen to a commission meeting while you're teaching. Not that I'd know anything about that. 😶 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀, 𝗜'𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗻𝗲. For me? That's another story for another day! 😬 𝗣.𝗦. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀. This summer I've been attending an 8 week class, 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝘀𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘆, learning about the specific workings of my local government. Highly recommend events like these!
