Summary of the year – statistics on operating days, port departures and number of ships And once again, the record was broken. In 2023, the number of operating days of vessels involved in MEWO’s survey projects exceeded 1500. We used a total of 20 ships and boats last year. No less important than the number of operating days was the number of port departures: 674. Probably no other company in Poland makes such extensive use of a fleet of smaller vessels, and no company knows Polish ports – large and small, with their advantages and disadvantages – better than MEWO S.A. And certainly, nobody knows more about what can be done in these ports on bad weather days than MEWO's survey teams. The first of four ferries being built in Turkey for Scotland's west coast routes will be launched on 16 March, ferry owner CMAL has announced. The MV Isle of Islay is then scheduled to arrive in Scotland in October this year and will serve Islay and Jura. The four ferries for CalMac routes are being built at the Cemre Marin Endustri shipyard in Yalovan. The work comes amidst continued frustration among island communities at the state of west coast services. Two late and over-budget ferries being built at the nationalised Ferguson Marine yard in Inverclyde, which were due to launch this spring, could face a further two-month delay. The Glen Sannox and Glen Rosa now have a price tag of at least £360m - compared to an initial estimate of £97m - for their construction at the yard in Port Glasgow. VESSEL REVIEW: Japan’s Kyokuyo Shipyard Corporation recently handed over a new whaling mothership to local operator Kyodo Senpaku. Named 'Kangei Maru' (関鯨丸), the vessel will operate primarily as a floating factory, with the actual catching of whales being done by other vessels equipped for that purpose. The vessel’s design was influenced by those of existing Ro-Ro vessels as a means of controlling construction costs. The electric propulsion arrangement includes four generators, each of which is fitted with systems for reducing CO2 emissions. Any caught whales are brought on board the vessel via a stern slipway angled at 18 degrees, which is shallower than on the operator’s earlier whaling ship. This feature can haul whales that weigh up to 70 tonnes each. Any catch is then transported to the upper deck, which features a cutting and weighing board measuring 70 metres (230 feet) long. This area of the vessel is fully enclosed to allow cutting to be done regardless of weather conditions, thus improving crew safety, sanitation, and whale quality. Full article link in comments.

This innovative step was announced during the 27th International Tug & Salvage Convention, Exhibition & Awards 2024 in Dubai. The Damen RSD-E Tug 2513, an all-electric harbor tug, is set to revolutionize marine services with its zero emissions from "Tank to Propeller." This tug not only promises operational efficiency with its 70-ton bollard pull capable of maneuvering the largest vessels but also offers cost savings through reduced maintenance needs compared to its diesel-powered counterparts. Initially, the tug will operate with generators that meet the latest IMO Tier 3 emission standards, providing a more fuel-efficient solution than traditional ASD tugs. This initial phase is part of SAFEEN Group’s broader strategy to formalize the electrification of its marine fleet. Plans for the near future include the establishment of a shore charging facility at Khalifa Port, designed to deliver 1.5 MW of power for charging.
