This is a very important topic. As more and more of us gets online and into Virtual Worlds - and in particular children and young people - a new world of opportunities, but also risks open up. I am thrilled to announce my participation in the upcoming Florence Conference on IP, Competition and Innovation, a prestigious event jointly organized by the renowned #MaxPlanckInstitute for Innovation and Competition and the #EuropeanUniversityInstitute! I'll be presenting my paper, "Uncovering the Role of Hubs: A Network Science Perspective on Platform Competition", forthcoming soon in the Stanford Journal of Law, Business and Finance! A pre-Publication version of the paper is available via the SSRN portal of the #CoaseSandorInstitute: https://lnkd.in/ddaAM3UB The paper draws on #networkscience to offer a novel legal framework for evaluating competition among digital platforms. Specifically, the paper debunks two prominent approaches in antitrust law, that network effects either lead to a winner-takes-all situation or, conversely, that they safeguard against platform market power abuses. In doing so, the paper coins the term #HubPlucking to highlight a critical yet surprisingly overlooked dynamic of platform competition: the competition between platforms over highly connected hubs.

Last week I had the pleasure to present my research on Geo-blocking & Jurisdiction regarding Cross-border Copyright Infringements at the launch of the book "Digital Platforms, Competition Law, and Regulation. Comparative Perspectives", editors: K Tyagi, Anselm Kamperman Sanders and Caroline Cauffman   My chapter "Assessing Geo-blocking as a Tool to Prevent the Risk of Being Sued in EU Member States for Cross-border Copyright Infringements. A Plea for the ‘Directed Activities" shows that Private International Law can be more than an area of law that coordinates cross-border private legal relationships. Its been just over a year since I transitioned from the Presidency of the European Court of Human Rights into the private sector at the fabulous law firm of Gibson Dunn practicing out of the Paris and London offices. Its been a heck of a ride, challenging and rewarding. I have been asked countless times over the past few months how an international judge can successfully move and adapt from the bench to the bar. Such a transition is very rare in Europe, but has a long history in the US with my partners federal judges Gregg Costa and George Jarrod Hazel as prime recent examples. There is no clear-cut answer. However, what is clear is that the current challenges facing the business sector in the European Union, when it comes to litigation before the EU Courts, dispute resolution and regulatory compliance matters, in particular in the tech and artificial intelligence sectors, are such that insights from the international bench have proven very valuable and effective for our clients. Moreover, the fields of international arbitration and public international law are natural practice areas to transition into after a career on the bench.
