Digital Decarbonisation at the World Economic Forum 🌐 Professors Tom Jackson and Ian Hodgkinson have joined by invitation the ‘ICT Roundtable Series: The Industry’s Energy Transition’ – a collaboration between the World Economic Forum’s Centre for Energy and Materials, the Forum’s ICT Industry team, and Accenture. The focus of the roundtable series is to horizon scan the landscape and uncover energy and climate challenges, as well as future pathways, for the ICT industry to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Following the Davos Governor’s meeting earlier in 2024, these issues are being explored through meetings of the industry working group comprising senior industry figures who hold responsibility for energy strategy and sustainability, leading experts and ICT policy players. Given the centrality of data to the ICT industry and the current data creation explosion, digital decarbonisation will be a critical component of the future data-scape. #ProgressWithPurpose

Better data handling is key to less energy consumption — particularly in network management. In fact, a report from Omdia found that 60% of the data they store is unused. Identifying and removing unused and unneeded data therefore seems like one obvious way in which companies can be more efficient. Digitalising data management is critical in having good data hygiene and reducing the environmental impact of data. #datamanagement #datacollection #sustainability

Interesting new World Economic Forum report which calls out that "While survey respondents note that sustainability is high on chief executive officers’ agendas.....only 14% of respondents are redesigning their manufacturing network to track and eliminate indirect greenhouse gas emission". The role of traceability data aggregator for the purpose of regulatory compliance (across an enterprise or across a value chain) fall to supply chain based technology providers who can capture, synthesize, and report at a granular level for reporting to the enterprise and the government. The message is clear; companies impacted by regulation continue to use hope as a strategy; specifically the "hope" that the hundreds of new regulations requiring tracking will somehow disappear. (pro tip: they will not).

Rewiring has indeed become a necessity in order to address the contemporary challenges faced by global supply chains. However, a crucial component that appears to be absent in the current set of strategies is the approach to interoperability across the value chain. By extending the multi-stakeholder approach, there emerges a need to enhance collaboration and data sharing up and down the value chain. Despite the phenomenal technological progress witnessed in the last four years, the architecture of B2B integration today remains fundamentally the same as it was 40 years ago. The only aspects that have evolved are the standards and protocols, but the architecture remains bi-directional. Therefore, to truly rewire and optimise our global supply chains, we must innovate and rethink this outdated architecture. This will enable us to fully leverage the potential of modern technology, fostering a more efficient, transparent, and sustainable global supply chain (network)
