Thank you to the Greatest Generation for your actions 80 years ago. You changed the course of history and stopped evil in its tracks. #wwii #dday
My dad was in the invasion. He survived with 2 Purple Hearts. In 2015, I was on a trip to Europe for a River cruise. After the cruise we stayed 10 days in France, visiting various places, including Omaha, Juno and Neptune beaches, the museum and grave sites. Absolutely amazing and most humbling. Although it wasn’t legal to do, I scooped up sand from all 3 landing points and brought it home in separate zip lock bags. My dad had since long ago passed away but it was in remembrance of what he and the 160,000+ thousand solders accomplished and sacrificed. Now resides in my album I put together of his many years of service, along with items from my 23 years in the Navy.I hope to go back again one day.
Eighty years ago today, June 7th, my uncle--Roland F. Smith--landed by sea on the beach at Normandy at the age of 23, and lived on to help liberate Paris. He died at the age of 97 in 2018, having lived his life in gratitude and a deep-seated spirit of being the guy who would give you the shirt off his back. He rarely spoke of his experiences in France and Germany during the 3 years he was there, but when he did it was riveting. Thank you, Uncle Roland, and all who lived and died fighting for freedom.
Would our military be able to stand up to a similar challenge today? My hope is yes. God Bless the U.S.A.!

3moI have visited the beaches, st mere eglise, point du hoc twice. It is unbelievable what those young men did. They believed in their country and what they were to face. I’ll never forget standing on the beaches and looking at what they faced. So heart breaking. So moving. That was my parents generation. They truly were the greatest. 🇺🇸
