Recent global crises have exposed vulnerabilities in the global supply chain and distribution networks for critical medical countermeasures (MCMs) against biothreats. The #pandemic has underscored the need to enhance supply chain resilience for future health emergencies. Several countries and regions are actively engaged in bolstering biosecurity and fortifying health emergency preparedness, with strategic stockpiling of countermeasures taking an increasingly prominent role. The Chatham House Global Health Programme is hosting a side meeting at the Prince Mahidol Award Conference (PMAC) in #Bangkok to discuss the range of considerations for the strategic stockpiling of countermeasures for health emergencies. In the aftermath of COVID-19, the global gains made in the fight against NCDs have withered. Countries have to take deliberate efforts to address this burden. One thing that has struck my imagination over the last couple of months is the little if not no support that the private sector health partners have the governments whose work they complement. Equipment for data capture, Capacity of the personnel, NCDs supply chain and surveillance is at a critical low.

During #COVID19, high quality data informed many countries’ pandemic response, helping to optimize resources for many stressed out health systems. The Chemonics International-led USAID Global Health Supply Chain Program-Procurement and Supply Management (GHSC-PSM) project contacted their staff and asked them what their top lessons learned about pandemic response were. One answer comes from Nabeel Malik, from the GHSC-PSM #Pakistan office, whose biggest lesson was to leverage existing systems so the benefits from the response efforts could expand to other health programs. Here, our very own Dr. Christopher Lee delivers remarks alongside colleagues from World Health Organization and UK Health Security Agency on the use of Joint External Evaluations (JEEs) to help countries identify—and bridge—gaps in health security capacities. Key takeaway? "Countries must both *prepare* and *act*. Investments in preparedness are critical, as is strong government leadership and evidence-based policy during crisis."
