If financial considerations were not a factor, my passion would lead me to teach and establish schools focused on the convergence of technology, design, business, and culture. As someone deeply passionate about the transformative power of education, I recently had the incredible opportunity to guest lecture at USC Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy. I was invited to share my insights in Sue Tan's Business Strategy and Innovation class, part of the master's program. The USC Iovine and Young Academy, funded by music moguls Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre,  is known for its innovative approach to education, blending art, technology, and business in a way that prepares students for the rapidly evolving world. During my lecture, we focused on transformational strategies drawing parallels from past experiences in the tech and e-commerce sectors. We delved into the intricacies of navigating the digital landscape, and how organizations evolve through their stages with products and also team profiles whether it’s 0-1, scale-up, or turnaround. The students' questions and insights reflected a deep understanding of the subject matter and a keen interest in applying these learnings to real-world scenarios. A reminder of the incredible potential that exists within our younger generation and so glad there are schools such as USC IOY that nourish these awesome talents. Jessica Corner has announced details of how the sector can get involved in the development of the People, Culture and Environment (PCE) element of the next REF, including: 1. The workshops we at Vitae will be running with our partners to co-develop indicators: https://lnkd.in/e--ZM5qH There will be 16 online workshops, spread over three phases to allow iteration and reflection, and covering themes such as open research, recognition, EDI, collaboration, strategy, and leadership. The workshops will be co-facilitated with project partners: Technopolis Group ARMA UK (Association of Research Managers and Administrators) UK Reproducibility Network (UKRN) National Co-ordinating Centre for Public Engagement (NCCPE) NADSN - National Association of Disabled Staff Networks and Black Female Academics' Network We will open registrations soon. 2. “We are aware that participation in REF 2029 carries a burden and we are committed to keeping the level of effort required to participate in the exercise to manageable levels. We are particularly conscious that the introduction of new elements in the assessment carries a start-up cost, and that this can have a disproportionate effect on smaller institutions”. Good opportunity to reflect on how one enables so-called pockets of excellence across the UK HEI sector to thrive, given the resourcing implications associated with REF2029.

Our expert panellists have studied and published on emotion in strategy, innovation and entrepreneurship in leading journals such as Academy of Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, Journal of Management Studies, Organization Science and Strategic Management Journal. Our PDW provides an opportunity to hear and learn from their experiences, to understand the various theoretical and methodological options that scholars studying (or wishing to study) such phenomenon have available, and to build your scholarly network by connecting with like-minded scholars. In Part 1️⃣, panellists will discuss their experiences using approaches such as appraisal theory and the affective circumplex model, as well as methods including coding facial expressions using artificial intelligence, micro-ethnography, and surveys. Working at Ad Astra was one of the many highlights in my career, where I gained invaluable insights from Tom Shaver and the entire executive team. Did you know that close to 60% of college and university students have faced situations where the courses essential for their major or degree were unavailable when needed? These obstacles not only prolong graduation timelines but also escalate costs for students and diminish retention and graduation rates. It's imperative for higher education institutions to elevate scheduling to a strategic priority rather than simply treating it as a routine administrative task. Check out Tom’s article.

On Tuesday 5 September, we kicked off the new academic year at the Faculty. And it was a special edition this time! Our Dean Jasper Knoester presented the new strategic plan 'Connecting through Curiosity' 🎉 The strategic plan was created thanks to the input of many people. ‘The new strategy has a strong focus on the community we want to be,' Knoester says. 'It is about the way we want to work and study together, the way we want this big organisation to work and to develop.’ The new strategic plan gives us guidelines for the coming years. ‘The world around us is changing continuously and even if we like our traditions, we need to adjust to those changes. It helps to have a guide, a compass to help us make decisions on how we adjust. What do we want the faculty to be in this changing world, what role do we want to play in it? What type of organisation do we want to be for our staff and students, and how do we fit within the university? This is what we describe in our strategic plan.’ Want to know more? Digital FIRST: Designing the future of the online university and snapping back to the old normal – A provocative and challenging changehack. This will be an entertaining and thought-provoking workshop on how we foster creativity, authenticity, and innovation in an era of generative AI, the snapback to face-to-face teaching and learning and the criticality of ensuring student success. Utilising the changehack problem solving and research methodology developed by Peter and David (with our valued colleagues Donna Lanclos (USA/IRE) and Lawrie Phipps (UK)) we will collectively design strategies for the new normal of higher education, where online and face-to-face are co-designed and co-exist in an environment of competing resources, complex capacity and capability challenges and valued driven assertions of relative and absolute educational merit. This workshop will create the spaces and share the capabilities that can help bridge these gaps. We want to help you be the nexus between practice and strategy, to be part of the discourse at your institution and empower you to actively shape teaching and learning at your institution. Using the principles of crowdsourcing, digital citizenship and collective problem solving, this workshop will generate, share, and challenge the key messages, tools, and strategies available that put the digital in the heart of the conversation and not as an uncritical duplication of institutional norms or as a fringe activity of the tech savvy. It is a great opportunity to get together, connect with others across the sector and debate some of the critical issues that will shape the higher and further education sectors as we enter this uncertain, transitional, and unknown new normal.
