What does this little screenshot have to do with CAUTI's? I said in a recent newsletter: "CAUTI’s are for indwelling foley catheters. They do not include condom catheters and suprapubic catheters, but I’ve seen these incorrectly called foley catheters in documentation. So, be careful with that." Then, my first day back on service I see it: A suprapubic catheter incorrectly called a foley catheter. Happens more than you think. In "Emergency Medical Services Protocols for Assessment and Treatment of Patients with Ventricular Assist Devices," Larson and Kilic et al. investigated the current status of emergency medical services (#EMS) protocols for ventricular assist devices (#VADs). VADs are able to support heart function, either as a bridge to transplant or, increasingly, as a long-term therapy. This means that EMS providers are likely to encounter a growing population of patients with VADs. Analysis of state EMS protocols in the United States highlighted significant heterogeneity in protocols. Only 66% of state protocols analyzed had any VAD-specific guidance, and among states with VAD protocols, the content of protocols varied for the assessment and treatment of patients with VADs. The findings of this study highlight the opportunity and need for VAD teams to partner with EMS agencies to inform standardized protocols that optimize care.
