The Toronto Aging Biology Symposium today is almost overly informative. Jose Luis Ricón Fernández de la Puente provided a more holistic view of many contradicting claims in the field of aging biology, and the difficulty in characterizing the real aging factor in diseases that happen more often in old age. Karim Mekhail talked about how the 3D non-random organization of the nucleus is related to aging. Kyle Loh used an interesting story about Mike the Headless Chicken to start his talk about the importance of the hindbrain due to its connection with the posterior neural ectoderm. Jeff Wrana showcased his research about revival stem cell offspring regenerating the small intestine and bowel and dived deep into both the induction and the conversion phase of regeneration. Olena Zhulyn, PhD compared the post-amputation regeneration process of axolotl and the regeneration process of humans and talked about mTOR being like a "on-off" switch in mammals but being a scale in axolotl. Kristen Fortney and Alex Colville's panel provided a lot of insights regarding the longevity of biotech startups & VC from industries' perspective. Maryam Faiz presented her amazing work about the reprograming of astrocytes to OLC driven by transcription factors. Amol Deshpande, Ann M., and Sonam Dubey, PhD's panel made me understand the importance of building a stronger Biotech Ecosystem and getting research out of the lab. It's always nice to join #biology #conferences like this as a #biomedicalengineering student in #EngSci. The faculty focus a lot more on the engineering side of things than the biology side for the first 2 years, and Human Biology Student's Union really provided tons of opportunities for me to keep up with the rapidly changing world of biology.
