When choosing college courses we are faced with many options. Myself I choose HR and after working in the Retail and Fitness/Leisure Industry I found myself using my HR Degree to an extent working in the Recruitment Industry. Many college graduates who have chosen a to do a course in Science or Engineering are being drawn to working in the Biopharma/Pharma/Med Device Industry for their careers. Here a recent graduate Azizat Oluwabukola Alimi discusses what drew her to working in the Biopharma industry and her Graduate Programme with BMS. In the article she discusses her scope of work, her typical day to day and why someone should apply to a graduate programme. A very interesting read. Best of luck with your future career Azizat!

The last week of the "You Can Do It" Internship Program was marked by a lecture from Dejan Ivanović, Director of Technical Operations for Southeast Europe. Dejan was a scholarship recipient of the Hemofarm Foundation, and today he is one of the leading figures at Hemofarm company. He discussed his career path with the scholarship recipients, the opportunities he created, the obstacles he faced, and how he overcame them. "The opportunity for growth is as big as your ambitions. It's important that each of us does our part, even when no one is watching. That's the key to success in large systems, where every link relies on each other. It's also important to respect the rules, especially in pharmaceutical production where people's health and product quality are a priority," Dejan advised the scholarship recipients of the 2023/2024 generation. #YouCanDoIt to follow in the footsteps of Dejan Ivanovic. Apply for the Hemofarm Foundation Scholarship Competition for the 2024/2025 school year, which we will announce in early autumn. 2024 Access to Medicines Summer Internship Program Roivant Sciences, Roivant Social Ventures (RSV), and Elutia have partnered to provide hands-on internship opportunities in drug development for talented PharmD students. The intentions of this program are to expand access to medicines to underserved populations, and to further UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy's goal of providing future industry leaders with pharmaceutical experience during their PharmD tenure. Reflecting on her experience as Roivant's 2023 Diversity in Pharma Research and Development Intern, Hannah Summers shared, “This experience has been nothing short of transformative. I have had the chance to delve into the various components of a pharmaceutical quality system, such as the importance of regulatory history and inspections, supplier qualification, and review of controlled documents, while witnessing the development of life-changing drugs, and actively participating in various aspects of the drug development process. These hands-on experiences have fostered a deeper understanding and appreciation for the work and dedication it takes to develop innovative medications.” We congratulate the following talented students on their 2024 internships: - Derek Bassett, Corporate Strategy Intern with Elutia, a biotech company led by RSV Advisory Board member C. Randal Mills, Ph.D. Elutia focuses on a proprietary drug-eluting biomaterial platform that stands at the forefront of medical innovation. - Amanda Bowlin, Regulatory Strategy Intern with Roivant Sciences. - Mackenzie Greene, RSV Global Access Fellow, volunteering with Goodlife Access and Goodlife Pharmacy Africa in Rwanda, Africa. - Ethan Hsu, Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Control (CMC) Intern with Roivant Sciences' Research and Development (R&D) team. - Magdalene Mallory, RSV Global Access Fellow, volunteering with Goodlife Access and Goodlife Pharmacy Africa in Rwanda, Africa. During the Spring 2024 semester all interns completed RSV's "Making Medicines" course. WHEN PASSION AND PREPAREDNESS MEET OPPORTUNITIES, MAGIC(THE DESIRED) HAPPENS! About two weeks ago, I stumbled upon a job advert from Xcene Research for the role of "Clinical Research Associate trainee," a position I've long been passionate about. Without hesitation, I dove into thorough research, meticulously examining the company's profile. This wasn't new territory for me; I had been ardently following Xcene Research for over two years. As I delved into the profiles of their staff, a common thread emerged – proficiency in Good Clinical Practice (GCP) ICH certifications. Recognizing the importance of aligning my skills with theirs, I promptly enrolled in a comprehensive GCP course, dedicating seven hours to its completion and securing certification. Fast forward to Monday, the day of the interview. I radiated confidence and optimism, fueled by the convergence of my passion, opportunity, and preparedness. Every question posed felt like an invitation to showcase not just my knowledge, but my unwavering dedication to the field. Even as I await the outcome, a profound sense of fulfilment envelops me. I've already won by giving my best, trusting in my preparation, and surrendering the final decision to God. To fellow seekers of opportunities, I implore you: let passion be your compass, let curiosity drive your preparation, and let readiness be your armour. For in that nexus lies the power to seize every opportunity that crosses your path.

I’ve observed a growing trend where Pharm.D candidates are spending on paid online courses. While continuous learning is valuable, it’s worth considering why these additional expenses may not always be necessary. 1. Your Pharm.D Program Rocks! 🎓: The curriculum is meticulously designed to cover all essential areas, from pharmacology to clinical practice, ensuring you become a well-rounded professional. 2. Hands-On Experience is Gold 🏥: The clinical rotations and internships provided by your Pharm.D program offer invaluable real-world experience that no online course can replicate. 3. Learn from the Best 👩🏫: Your professors and mentors are seasoned professionals with a wealth of knowledge and practical insights. Their guidance is often more beneficial than what you might gain from online courses. 4. Build Your Network 🌐: Your Pharm.D program offers opportunities to connect with peers, faculty, and industry professionals. These relationships can be instrumental in your career development and open doors to new opportunities. 5. Save Your Money 💰: Instead of investing in online courses, consider allocating your resources to other educational enhancements such as conferences, workshops, or valuable reference books. 6. Focus on What Matters 🎯: Trust the process of your Pharm.D program. It’s designed to equip you with the core skills needed for a successful career. Concentrate on excelling in your studies and making the most of the resources already available to you. Many successful Pharm.D alumni, including my own seniors, have never felt the need for extra paid courses. They relied on the robust training and hands-on experience provided by their Pharm.D program and thier internship. Remember, the true value of our education lies in the experiences and knowledge we gain, not the number of certificates we collect. Embrace your Pharm.D journey and trust in the comprehensive training you’re receiving. Stay focused and keep learning! 🌟 #PharmD #PharmacyEducation #ProfessionalDevelopment #ContinuousLearning

“𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐋𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮?” A great question from one of our summer interns – thanks Bailey! Moving beyond my personal example, it is THE QUESTION for each of us as we navigate our career paths. Some questions you should be asking yourself are as follows: · Do you feel welcome and valued? · Can you be your authentic self? · Do your values align with the team mission? · Are you acting with purpose? · Are you seeing investment in your journey from others? · Are you growing as a person and as a professional? · Are you happy? Obviously working in the professional world, especially the biomedical space, is not all sunshine and roses. Transitions are hard. Defeat is common, victory elusive. The key is to remember your ‘why.’ So, my answer. 𝐋𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐈 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐚 𝐃𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 My early years at Lilly were difficult in many ways. I was not convinced I really fit. I liked the strong patient focus. I liked many of the people. But the processes and my lack of understanding as to how to navigate a complex organization made me wonder about the long term. But over time, I began to see the answers to most of those questions falling into place. I was gaining confidence that I could make an impact. I could move the science; I could help make Lilly a better place. I could make a difference. But it wasn’t overnight, and the signals were mixed. Not jumping to the wrong conclusion too early was crucial. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐃𝐨 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐚𝐬𝐦 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞? No journey is perfect and at times the imperfections and challenges seem more numerous than the victories. Keeping perspective (Eye on the Prize) is critical. Early on in my career and in a moment of feeling sorry for myself, I was lamenting my challenges and my unhappiness with those issues to a colleague. She, a patient herself, offered the most impactful (and devasting) reply possible. “𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘴 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘮𝘺 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘴𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴?” Gut punch. A strong reminder of what really matters. Ultimately, the answer was clear. I have choices. We all do. Patients do not. Patients don’t choose to get cancer, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, etc. I chose this journey, both the good and at times the not so good. To make a difference. I could act with purpose. Every day. 𝘈𝘴𝘬 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧. 𝘋𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘮𝘺 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸 𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘮𝘺 𝘣𝘦𝘴𝘵? 𝘛𝘰 𝘢𝘤𝘵 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘱𝘶𝘳𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘦? Then you will have your answer. #destination #purpose #challenge #journey
