Happy 4th Anniversary GetFTR! Since our launch in 2020, GetFTR has continued to develop in order to meet the needs of our research community. GetFTR appreciates the support from the American Chemical Society, Elsevier, Springer Nature Group, Taylor & Francis Group, Wiley, and other publishers who have partnered since launch. We continue to develop enhancements and new services to improve the discovery and access of the authoritative, up-to-date content that researchers are entitled to read. This is a classic example of maternal bias (one of the most common workplace biases): the notion that mothers are not as committed to their jobs and shouldn't be promoted/take on high level positions. Fatherhood is generally not even considered when hiring or promoting men. Enjoyed my conversation with Michael Follett and Emma Jowett at todays event hosted by Integral Ad Science . Some telling signs, when asked, about 79% of the audience in attendance said they had ‘worked with’ attention metrics, but on probeing only 1 attendee kept their hand raised when asked who has had adopted ‘attention’ as part of their standard ‘always on’ approach to measurement. This means ‘Attention’ metrics are still very much in the testing phase and although attention is a hot topic and on many people’s minds and indeed the agendas of conference, even 5yrs in, it’s still got a way to go to becoming commonplace. More work needs to be done to establish the brand and business effect of attention optimisation for media, to demonstrate their superiority over existing digital KPIs which still have a hold over the ecosystem, and perhaps more done by industry bodies to create clarity around the differing metrics appearing in the space. I fear ‘attention fatigue’ will set in before long, but the reality is no one has really scratched the surface yet. Even the basics of optimisation away from ‘inattention’ are not yet widespread, and given the challenges with MFA and fraud, this is frankly baffling. We need to move faster and make more progress.

I aim to create pathways for youth, especially those from marginalized backgrounds, to explore research careers and opportunities. By providing mentorship, resources, and outreach programs, I seek to break down barriers and inspire the next generation of diverse researchers. Additionally, I am committed to highlighting the achievements of women of color in these fields, showcasing their expertise and leadership to demonstrate that success knows no boundaries. Through these efforts, I aspire to foster inclusivity, diversity, and excellence in medical and scientific research, ultimately driving innovation and addressing healthcare disparities." Janae, thank you for sharing these valuable insights! You have been an example of excellence in your journey thus far and will only continue to grow personally and professionally moving forward.

Tomorrow marks the 4th of July, a day to celebrate America's independence and the innovative spirit that has fueled our nation. Here at BioHub Maryland, we're proud to carry that torch forward by fostering collaboration and accelerating talent in the life sciences industry. Fantastic initiative, and a real pleasure to be part of it. Hearing about the experiences of other centres across the globe makes clear how important but also how incredibly fragile the whole field is: most centres lack robust infrastructure support and investment, making it difficult to run and maintain activities and, especially, to build and secure the next generation(s) of scholars in the area. For example, for any PhD student we would like to support at the Centre for the Study of Philanthropy & Public Good, we need to find and secure a total funding of around £75,000-£120,000. Thereafter, to fund a single postdoctoral position one is looking at a minimum of £50,000 per annum (including National Insurance, pension, in costs, etc.) that need to be raised. Then, in the absence of any permanent positions in the area over here, all that investment, time, support, and the expertise that has been built over that period, currently often do not even benefit the Scottish (and at times European) philanthropy research field as early career colleagues are faced with an infinitesimally small number of national and international opportunities that might arise but, more likely than not, do not, leading to exits and brain drain from the field in general. So, assuming that one considers the field and its contributions to be important, there is some real work to be done about making it more sustainable in general, but also more attractive and accessible for younger researchers...
