Not all companies slow down or stop hiring in Q4! Here are three tips to help job seekers navigate December searches: 1️⃣ Treat a December search like you would a January search. No need to let up on applications and LinkedIn outreach. Many teams are interviewing now for January start dates, and a job open today may not be there in January. Plus staying active now puts you a step ahead of those who wait until the calendar page turns. 2️⃣ Tune out the "noise" you may hear about companies not hiring in Q4. Because it's just that... noise. Recruiters and hiring teams will tell you, that while the slowdown happens in some companies (and layoffs too), if a hiring team has an opening now, they want a candidate now. Get yourself positioned for that interview. Don't let chatter distract or discourage you. Focus will pay off! 3️⃣ Stay consistent with job search best practices. When we work with candidates, we help them match their resume strengths to the job description, provide important information about the hiring company, and help prep for interviews. If you are applying for a job on your own, these things are important for you too! Make sure your resume answers the job description needs. Do your research on the company so you are prepared for interview questions AND more importantly, you feel like the company culture/values/mission/product or service is a good match for you. I've been on the hunt for my next role for about a month and a half now. A quick observation – the state of candidate experience is... not cute. 😵💫 I might be spoiled from working with a high-functioning Recruiting team at FullStory, or maybe I just have high standards from being a Recruiting Coordinator and later managing our Candidate Experience team, but y'all. We can certainly do better. I firmly believe that... ✨ EVERY candidate deserves an update on their application within a reasonable amount of time. If it's a no, it's a no. But ghosting is rude, especially in a day and age where your ATS system should be able to automate bulk rejections. Use your tools to your advantage in building a best-in-class experience! ✨ Your role location should be accurate. If you change directions and decide a role ought to be based somewhere specific, send an update. #cleariskind ✨ Application questions are useful when you're receiving a high volume of candidates (like, ahem, during a spree of layoffs); but why do we need so many? They aren't a replacement for an interview – keep them tight and aligned to the minimum qualifications. ✨ Your communications should tell a candidate who you are. Personalize them. Include easter eggs with pertinent information about your company or what it's like to work for your organization! ✨ This one is just a pet peeve, but can we stop using the word "fit" when it comes to candidates? People come in a whole host of varieties and they don't always fit the mold; sometimes they break it. Look for your best "match" instead. 🙃 The application process is where you make your first impression with candidates. People always will remember a poor experience; why not try to give them a good one?

After speaking with thousands of candidates, I can confidently state that most of us do not love getting interviewed for a job. While some recruiters and companies do a wonderful job of making the experience as seamless as can be, the pressure of having to deliver in a limited time span and being evaluated on just a fraction of our skills is frustrating. Add to this our not-so-peachy economy with its never-ending layoffs—pushing countless talented people into overly busy hiring funnels—it’s a bit of a nightmare, really. As a recruiter, I would spend a considerable amount of time reassuring candidates that feeling nervous wasn’t something they were at fault for or that they had to turn off. If someone would reach out to share their worries, I’d send them a list with tips. I kept revising the list according to their feedback and added some extra bits to it more recently, after a training. You can find the list in the slides below (did you know you can download them?). Not all tips will be effective for you—but if you are looking to feel more confident when it comes to interviewing, some of them might help. And please forward them to anyone who might be struggling to find a job at the moment. The list doesn’t include the most obvious tip: thoroughly prepare—because it deserves its own post. As a recruiter, I want to share some advice with job seekers out there: There is zero need to differentiate on your resume or LinkedIn profile if you worked on-site or remote. Doing so only introduces bias into the application process. There is no need to explain why you were laid off at all. In most cases, assumptions are wrong and layoffs are not a reflection of your performance as an employee. Those giving contrary advice are out of touch and unaware of the current job market. In light of the recent layoffs, many talented professionals are finding it increasingly difficult to secure new job opportunities. The competition is fierce, and one of the biggest challenges is ensuring that your resume gets past the initial screening by Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). A “career gap” does NOT DEFINE a person’s potential abilities…I have acquired quite a few LIFE skills since graduating college, but the BIGGEST thing that I have learned is that things very seldom go according to plan. In fact, you better buddy up with adaptability and resiliency if you want to make it in the real world. I was lucky enough to be the primary caregiver to our special needs for almost 13 years until he passed unexpectedly. I went from ASSUMING I would create a name for myself in business, to never getting the chance. My “day-to-day” life, was LITERALLY keeping someone alive. I watched as people set expectations for him-survival chances, life expectancy, cognitive awareness…all without ever actually GETTING a diagnosis. Did I just sit and watch it happen? No. I sent his medical records to the top doctors in the country, I researched relentlessly, and I challenged HIM to prove people wrong. And he did. Not one part of that was taught in my college business or design courses. The tasks that I completed as a special needs mom, are ones that I quite frankly underestimated for a REALLY long time. As mom’s, we “just do” whatever it takes for our kids. I compounded and administered a minimum of 16 meds daily, I advocated for his rights, and argued with insurance frequently. I didn’t sleep because I was always watching for seizures, changed gastric feeding tubes, and spent weeks in the hospital with him. After he passed away, I began navigating my grief journey. I had a daughter in kindergarten and twin 18 month old daughters to get up for every day…. But do you know what felt (feels) like adding insult to injury? Applying for jobs, and getting the feedback that I have no career experience. In anything. That BEING a special needs mom, or a mom in general, counts as nothing. It completely DEVALUES and MINIMIZES my personal situation, and moms in general. You are analyzing people based on snippets, not stories. I can guarantee you that as a mother trying to RE-enter the workplace, I am more dedicated than ever to learning new skills. I WANT to have a career that I truly love, and show my girls that it IS possible…Being a special needs mom made me more flexible, understanding, and accommodating than I probably ever would have achieved without our son. If someone WERE lucky enough to secure an interview, PLEASE know that they most likely are EXTREMELY passionate about being IN that position to which they applied. They are EAGER to learn! And if you MUST ask about the “career gap”, please remember, it is part of someone’s story…a part where the gap is getting wider. Be the employer that takes the chance to BRIDGE THE GAP! #careergap #momsholdvalue

Can we please stop asking about job gaps during interviews? - Life happens. - Kids happen. - Health issues happen. - Layoffs happen. - Family commitments happen. It has no bearing on their ability to do the job effectively. Frankly, the same employers who ask about them often cause them. Expecting a candidate to justify each small gap is insensitive and might even be discriminatory. Is it really your business to know they had to take a year off of work to fight cancer or to take care of their dying family member? Focus on what skills they bring to the table and what problems they can solve rather than the arbitrary five-month gap after a global health crisis. Remember, it could happen to you, too.

⭐️ TIP TUESDAY ⭐️ Ask open-ended questions. This goes for recruiters, hiring managers, candidates, and everyone in between! To truly learn about what is important to a candidate or hiring manager, open-ended questions are key! Rather than asking "are you open to on site?" try asking "what sort of commute are you comfortable with?" This tells you what sort of restrictions a candidate may have, rather than finding out later in the process. Rather than asking "is this a new position?" try asking "why is this position open?" This is the resume last year that helped me get multiple interviews and close to 4 offers during the peak of layoffs. There is so much noise going around that resumes have to look or be a certain way. However my resume was color coded, the format was different, and it did get through to the ATS-because the ATS is human (not robotic as people make it out to be). I got a lot of positive feedback from recruiters and hiring managers that my resume was clean, neat, and different and they loved how it listed out all my accomplishments and skillsets. As a recruiter now, I’ve screened hundreds of resumes. Some of different fonts, styles, and some even have pictures, but those candidates weren’t discriminated for how their resumes looked. They were advance to the interview round and got an offer regardless. Most hiring managers care more about the skill sets on your resume than they do about the design of it. Resumes to an extent do tell a story, but they don’t define nor showcase the potential a person may have.
