Authentic autistic representation in the mainstream media is so important! For many autistic individuals, it can be affirming and comforting to see oneself portrayed accurately. Also, how cool is it to see that others experience the world similar to you and that many of your experiences are also others' experiences?! For those who do not yet identify as autistic, authentic representation allows for the opportunity to recognize parts of themselves in the portrayal, learn more about autism, and consider if this identity fits them. And for those who identify as neurotypical, it allows for increased knowledge and the challenging of stereotypes and biases. Was grateful to spend my Friday afternoon listening to Barry Carpenter talk about the very important and misunderstood issues around identifying girls with autism. The issues are not with the girls, but with the rest of us who have failed, once again, to give girls the support they need. I certainly learned a lot, a few key points being: - Autistic Girls present differently than boys. - Girls and women can often take years, sometimes decades to be diagnosed. - Autistic Girls are very good at masking behaviours and can spend years and years expertly and exhaustingly living a lie. I was fortunate enough to read the work of Dr Nick Chown and team, in a paper which discusses the difference between supporting autistic children to appear 'normal' vs supporting autistic children from the positionality of acceptance - therefore more focused on wellbeing. How do you feel autistic children are best supported? Do you think we should encourage acceptance approaches across therapy and schools? Are you a clinician or educator who is curious about autism and neurodivergence? This book is a great overview of the diverse ways that autism can present and impact a person's life. The focus of this book is NOT on autistic people with high support needs and/or individuals who may be easily recognized/diagnosed as autistic. This is not to take away or invalidate their experiences or to suggest that their experiences are less important and less worthy of recognition, it is just not the focus of this book.
