In this episode of Open Book, we hear from Jenn Shively, loving mom, loving wife, and Executive Director of Anything' PAWsible. Anything's PAWSible was founded out of a desire to make a difference in the lives of children with disabilities by assisting them in gaining access to service dogs. Service dogs can be paired with children as young as five years old. Providing this significant resource to young children with disabilities allows for increased independence and emotional support during formative years of their lives. Anything's PAWSible supports children with disabilities and their families providing education, advocacy, and grants to help defray the cost of service dogs. Did you know? The numbers are staggering, and it's time to raise awareness! In the United States, one in three children will experience interactions with the foster care system by adulthood. Shockingly, for Black children, it's one in two. These statistics highlight the urgent need for support and change in our communities. At Snohomish County CASA, we are committed to making a difference in the lives of these children. Our dedicated advocates work tirelessly to provide a voice for those who need it most. Let's come together, raise awareness, and be the change these statistics desperately need. Share this post, spread awareness, and let's build a future where every child has the love and stability they deserve. #FosterCareAwareness #Blackhistorymonth #BeTheChange #RaiseAwareness #MakeADifference #EveryChildMatters #SnohomishcountyCASA #CASA #Snohomishcounty

A pitch to pitch in this #NationalFosterCareMonth! Children that happen to have contact with the foster care system are a) #children and b) children equally deserving of care and support in a #family unit. Some need temporary support, others need more, but each of them in their own way contribute to the champions that partner with them. And there is something everyone can do to pitch in to the solution. In the abundance of our existence, it is a travesty that the brilliance of some children is dimmed through no fault of their own. Worst, the internalization of this neglect sometimes leads to cerebral and mental health degeneration that compounds over time. Ways to help one or more foster care children - 1. There are about 3.5 million households in LA County. About 30,000 children, plus or minus, in foster care, a fraction of them in search of adoption. Of the 3.5 million households, if you are a household that can provide a loving environment, consider learning more about adoption with an organization like Hillsides. 2. Adopting isn't the only way to help. Consider learning more about being a resource family for a foster care child that needs a temporary accommodation. 3. You can help in other ways, too. You can be part of all those success stories you see and hear about in the news! Can your work team or school sponsor a drive to gather new toiletries or coats or duffel bags that will go to an organization supporting foster care youth? Can your family or friend group commit to gathering $100 worth of pre-teen or teen related fun items (like board games, journals, gift cards) to offer a sense of normalcy during the holidays? Can you donate your hard-earned money to an organization like Hillsides toward the eventual success story of one of these children? Giving is one of the most fulfilling acts. However it is you have thought about pitching in, if you haven't or haven't in a while - I encourage you to get involved today! Learn more at hillsides.org/get-involved
✨ May is #NationalFosterCareMonth, and we want to extend our deepest gratitude to the incredible resource and adoptive families who open their hearts and homes to children and youth in need. Your decision to support and love a child is truly profound, and we salute each and every one of you for your empathy, compassion, and dedication. Thank you for #CreatingLastingChange in the lives of children. 💙 https://lnkd.in/g-kvKPWY #FosterToAdopt #NationalFosterCareMonth #FosterCareAwareness #ThankYouResourceFamilies

Have you ‘stepped into the breach’ to provide a home to children in your family? Did you get any financial, practical or emotional support when you offered to help to look after the children - to take on school runs and sandwiches and lack of sleep? To navigate a complex legal system? We know there are thousands of relatives and friends stepping up for children in times of need. You shouldn’t have to do this alone. Support services like our free advice line are available. But there are policies we need national and local government to change and introduce too. We at Family Rights Group want to know what you need and there are just two days left to contribute your experiences to our Kinship Carers Survey. For those who wear the mantle of kinship care – numbers, stories and your insights will help us to support you by pressing government for this recognition. Help us build a better system that values and supports kinship families. Take our survey or share with families in your networks https://lnkd.in/etqMjvct #Children #KinshipCare #Policy #Campaign #Advocacy #Families

Working in silos is one of the most common, and most harmful practices that has helped create the disaster, chaos and legacy of today’s Ontario “child welfare”. In my experience, one of the biggest stonewalling responses of in-care department workers, especially when an attempt to bring parent and kin voices to the table is made, “well, that is not my client.” Time, and time again. How are you truly in the service of the child if you don’t believe you should have anything to do with the people who are not paid to be in their lives? Use your courage. Ask better questions. Open your heart and your mind. Go beyond the standards, and keep going.

Parents were literally invisible to me when I was running a foster care program. They weren’t our client. This is one of the harms I perpetuated. I’ll never forget one foster parent saying, “I have no use for that woman”, speaking of a child’s mother. This type of othering and dehumanizing mentality is what makes stories like those told in this short film so common. I often say we have to make the invisible visible. Myah Overstreet and the rest of the production crew did just that in their film “To Be Invisible”. This is a must watch for anyone working in child welfare. When we see our shared humanity in one another we will invest in our collective wellbeing. #documentary #parentsfirst #familywellbeing #fostercare #childwelfare https://lnkd.in/eW9WTKNd
