The worst thing store managers do to themselves is they underestimate their potential.😔 This evening, I met a store leader from a reputed brand. I casually asked him how his store performed this big National Day weekend. ‘We did horrible!’ he said. I asked why. Other stores from his region performed far better than his, and his Area Manager said, ‘You should learn from others’! I said it’s ok; time will change, and you’ll be at the front one day. But he insisted that he thinks he is not capable enough. Whether the Area Manager is at fault is a debate for another day. But no store leader should beat themselves up for their store performance. Store management is like a rough sea and store leaders are the sailors. There is no fun in this job if we don’t see the ups and downs. Diploma in Retail Management Retail Management refers to the day-to-day store operations, merchandise display, and customer service to strategy formulation, sales optimisation, and brand promotion. A retail management degree focuses on preparing you for careers in the retail industry, specifically in managerial and leadership roles.

Most organisations do not get a return on their investments in graduates or early careers. Even more don't even really try. Which is a tragedy as it means they are missing out on the talent that could have made them great. One exception to this in the UK is ALDI the supermarket chain. Over the years we have watched what they have done and they appear to have really nailed it. They have that rarity, a truly coherent strategy that matches what they do with who they are to deliver unique value. They make sharp choices on where to play and how they are going to win and then ace the execution. The result has been market leading business growth and a leadership team who have come through this approach. So it looks like they are doing something right which is worth exploring. ________ We are only interested observers of this, and have no inside knowledge of how the strategy was developed or how it is delivered. It is from the outside that we have put together our thoughts on why what ALDI does works as a brilliant example of talent strategy in action we can learn from. Retailers are not low skilled workers ‼️ Until this narrative changes Younger generations will not want or desire to build a career in the industry These phrases were said to me (& possibly you) when we started out on retail floors 👇🏼 “It’s easy work, wait until you get a real job” “Must be horrible dealing with customers all day” “You’ll never make a proper living in this line of work” How misguided! My career path was something like: Concession manager at 19 Key account manager at 25 Regional operations manager at 29 Country manager at 31 Franchise manager at 34 And now I run my own retail academy & have served clients such as Skechers, Gap, Rituals, Tommy Hilfiger, IKEA & more Retail work gave me the core skills to run my business Retail taught me ✅ Communications ✅ Sales ✅ Forecasting ✅ Operations ✅ Stakeholder management ✅ Organisation ✅ Creativity ✅ Time management ✅ Conflict management …etc etc My business has been almost fully booked for 3.5yrs ❤️ Not bad for a low skilled worker ✌🏼 #retailing #leadership #success #mindset

Retail Today / Retail Renaissance: Publix’s annouces their new executive team for 2023. This massive grocery chain with 240,000 associates, over 1,300 stores and producing $41 Billion in sales. Now has their team in place for the future. Similar to our discussion last week about Walmart, all three Publix executives started as hourly associates, this is “the MAGIC” of the Retail Industry. My gut tells me they worked very hard, outstanding work ethic, took pride in their jobs at all levels, listened, were respectful and supported their coach/mentor. It didn’t happen overnight, but they put the time in, learned how to develop relationships, improved their skill set with each opportunity. They created new leaders along the way, strengthening the Publix’s team. They probably never “quiet quit” or demanded to “work remotely”, they just found the harder they worked, the more successful they became. In this category, we aim to recognise the pivotal role store managers play in the success of businesses and to honour their unwavering commitment to excellence. The nomination process will be as follows - A senior representative from your company (e.g. Store Owner, Director, CEO) will be asked to nominate their Store Manager of the Year.  You can do that by emailing [email protected] - Nominations will be analysed by the ASI Awards Team to ensure validity. - The senior representative of the company will be asked to complete a submission for their Store Manager of the Year. - The submissions will be reviewed and scored by an independent judging panel. The criteria for this award is as follows: - The Store Manager must have been employed in your business for at least the past 12 months. - The Store Manager must be nominated by a senior representative from your company (e.g. Store Owner, Director, CEO). - Definition of Store Managers: All individuals in the position of Store Manager of a retail outlet (online or shopfront) operating in the Australian Surf Industry are eligible. - Business owners who are the sole Store Manager do not qualify. Managers of multiple stores or Area Managers also do not qualify. Managers of purely online stores can enter if they could reasonably be defined as a Store Manager. The business must have been in operation for at least 12 months and continue to be in operation on 24 October 2024.
